A.D. 1229 Sasso Pisano in the Middle Ages is the historical re-enactment that transports the village of Sasso Pisano, a hamlet of the Municipality of Castelnuovo di Val di Cecina in the province of Pisa, back to the atmosphere of the 13th century. The chosen date, 1229, recalls a specific moment in the town's medieval history, and for one day, the historic center transforms into a small medieval village, populated by re-enactors, artisans, and jugglers.

Markets, games, and shows

The program weaves together different aspects of the village festival, revisited with a historical twist. Markets featuring local products and handcrafted goods are set up in the alleys, while games and performances engage both adults and children throughout the day. In the evening, the re-enactment culminates with a medieval dinner, a convivial moment that concludes the event in the heart of the village.

The geothermal village of Sasso Pisano

Sasso Pisano is one of the most evocative places in the Val di Cecina: perched on a rocky spur, the town is famous for its geothermal landscape, with fumaroles and steam vents emitting vapor from the ground. The medieval core, gathered around the church of San Bartolomeo and the so-called "Buca di San Rocco," offers a perfect natural setting for a historical re-enactment. Not far away, in the Bagnone area, the remains of the Etruscan-Roman thermal complex of the "acque volaternae" survive, a testament to the territory's ancient vocation.

The event is organized by the Municipality of Castelnuovo di Val di Cecina with the involvement of the local community and is part of the territory's summer calendar, alongside other appointments dedicated to discovering the village, its history, and geothermal energy.
