About Acerra Carnival

The Acerra Popular Carnival is the grand street festival that brings the streets of Acerra, in the heart of the Naples Metropolitan City, to life every February. For three days, papier-mâché floats created by local groups parade through the town, accompanied by masks, confetti, children's entertainment, and DJ sets. It is a popular tradition deeply rooted in the city's identity and the figure of Pulcinella, uniting entire neighborhoods in an atmosphere of joy and community participation.

The Acerra Popular Carnival

The Acerra Popular Carnival is one of the most cherished events in the festive calendar of Acerra, a town in the Naples Metropolitan City, in Campania. Every year, in the days leading up to and including Shrove Tuesday, the streets fill with allegorical floats, masks, and confetti for a celebration that engages both young and old in an atmosphere of authentic popular joy.

Allegorical floats and master papier-mâché artists

The heart of the event lies in the allegorical floats made of papier-mâché, built with passion by local groups and master craftsmen. Satire, cartoons, fantasy characters, and current events take shape on colorful structures that slowly parade through the crowds, followed by masked groups, music, and entertainment.

A carnival spread across the neighborhoods

One of the most recognizable features of the Acerra Popular Carnival is its widespread nature: the parades are not concentrated in a single location but cross different neighborhoods of the city, from Piazza Calipari to the Spiniello area, and reaching as far as Pezzalunga. In this way, the festival reaches entire districts, transforming streets and squares into open-air stages and strengthening the community's sense of belonging.

Tradition, masks, and Pulcinella

Acerra is deeply linked to the figure of Pulcinella, the famous mask of the Neapolitan tradition: the city claims its origins and has dedicated a museum to it. This bond gives the Acerra carnival a unique identity, where folklore, popular traditions, and local culture intertwine with contemporary fun.

A festival for families and children

Alongside the float parades, the program includes children's entertainment, shows, street performers, and DJ sets, making the event suitable for the whole family. Admission to the parades is free, allowing everyone to join the festivities along the city routes.

When it takes place

The Acerra Popular Carnival is held every year in the days leading up to and including Shrove Tuesday, with several days of parades distributed across different points of the city. The organization is managed by the Municipality of Acerra, with the involvement of local associations and float groups, in an event that has become a long-awaited tradition for the entire community.
