About A Visària

Every spring, the historic center of San Mauro Castelverde, nestled in the Madonie mountains in the province of Palermo, transforms into an open-air Jerusalem. "A Visària" is a traveling sacred representation of the Passion and Death of Christ: over a hundred performers, mostly local youths, bring Gospel scenes to life along a route that winds through squares, narrow alleys, and the ruins of the castle. More than just a performance, it is a collective spiritual journey where the audience is not merely a spectator, but an active part of one of the most deeply felt traditions of the Madonie Holy Week.

A village that becomes Jerusalem

In the heart of the Madonie, at an altitude of over a thousand meters, the small town of San Mauro Castelverde (Province of Palermo, Sicily) preserves one of the most intense religious re-enactments on the island. "A Visària" is the sacred representation of the Passion and Death of Christ: for one day, the entire historic center turns into a traveling stage, where faith, history, and community identity merge into a single emotional journey.

A traveling path through the village streets

The uniqueness of "A Visària" lies in its immersive nature: there is no fixed stage, but a series of stations that trace the Via Crucis, touching the village's iconic landmarks. The audience follows the performers from scene to scene, gradually becoming immersed in the Gospel narrative. The main stops on the route are:

  • Piano Teatro — The Last Supper
  • Via Garibaldi — The Garden of Gethsemane
  • Piazza Municipio — The Sanhedrin, the Roman Praetorium, and the death sentence
  • Castle ruins area — The ascent to Golgotha and the Crucifixion, the final scene

Over a hundred performers

Bringing the Gospel protagonists to life are over a hundred performers, mostly local youths, whose costumes and dedication lend authenticity to the entire representation. It is a choral effort that makes "A Visària" a true shared heritage, capable of uniting multiple generations of the San Mauro community.

A rediscovered tradition

After twelve years of silence, the event has returned to the streets of the historic center, rediscovered and relaunched by the community. The most recent edition marks the tenth year of this modern phase, confirming it as a firmly established fixture in the Madonie Holy Week calendar.

Organizers

The event is promoted by the "L'Eremo" Cultural and Musical Association, in synergy with the Municipality of San Mauro Castelverde and the Parish. The representation is sponsored by the Ministry of Culture and supported by European Union funds under the NextGenerationEU program. Admission is free.

A Visària — edition 2026

The tenth edition of "A Visària" took place on Saturday, April 11, 2026, in the historic center of San Mauro Castelverde, following a postponement due to bad weather from the originally scheduled date of April 4.
