Two days of 'Penne Nere' in San Gillio, featuring commemoration, parades, and brass bands
In the heart of the western suburbs of Turin, the small town of San Gillio (Province of Turin, Piedmont) is marking a major milestone: the 55th anniversary of the founding of its Alpini Group. For the occasion, the town will be dressed in its finest for an entire weekend, Saturday, May 23rd, and Sunday, May 24th, 2026, welcoming the 'Penne Nere' (Black Feathers) of the region for an event that blends memory, tradition, and community spirit.
The anniversary coincides with the 4th Festival of the 5th Zone of the National Alpini Association (ANA), the district of the Turin Section that brings together thirteen municipalities in the Turin area. It is a traveling festival that changes host town every year: in 2026, it is San Gillio's turn to do the honors, gathering the local groups around their banners and brass bands.
The most anticipated and symbolic moment is the passing of the 'stecca' of the 5th Zone: the baton representing the organization of the festival, which passes from the San Gillio Alpini Group to the Rosta Group, who will host the following edition. It is a simple gesture, yet deeply meaningful, reflecting the continuity and transmission of Alpini values from generation to generation.
The heart of the event lies in the commemorative ceremonies: the laying of wreaths for the fallen of all wars, paying respects at the cemetery, and the unveiling of a plaque to dedicate a square. Surrounding these solemn moments is the more convivial side of the event, featuring an Alpini-style breakfast, a parade, and a community lunch in the square, with the participation of local authorities, including the Deputy Mayor of San Gillio.
A day dedicated to friendship, solidarity, and remembrance, making San Gillio the Alpini capital of the 5th Turin Zone for the weekend.
San Gillio (TO), Piedmont. Main reference point: Oratorio San Giuseppe; ceremonies and parade take place in the town streets, lunch in Piazza XXV Aprile.
