The sailing race that kicks off the season on the Roman coast
The 30+Trenta is one of the most recognizable sailing races on the Roman coast: an offshore competition consisting of two legs of approximately thirty miles each, connecting the Porto Turistico di Roma in the municipality of Fiumicino (Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, Lazio) to the ports of the Tyrrhenian coast. The name itself refers to the formula that made it famous: thirty miles out, thirty miles back.
The event is promoted by the Circolo Velico Fiumicino, a historic sailing club on the coast, in collaboration with the Nettuno Yacht Club and under the aegis of the Italian Sailing Federation. The partnership between the two clubs has strengthened over the years, making the 30+Trenta a permanent fixture in the Lazio sailing calendar, uniting two coastal towns that look out over the same sea.
The main route takes boats from the waters off the Porto Turistico di Roma to the Marina di Nettuno, with arrival in the afternoon, before returning to Fiumicino the following day. In recent editions, the format has expanded to include a second dedicated leg heading north towards the Porto Turistico di Riva di Traiano, offering owners a more complete program spread between spring and early summer.
The 30+Trenta is not just a timed race. The event is designed as a weekend at sea where competition blends with a social atmosphere: crews meet at the ports, enjoying dockside parties and social moments that involve families and supporters. This is one of the reasons why the race attracts a wide variety of boats every year, from cruising yachts to more regatta-oriented hulls.
Even those not on board can enjoy the day: the departures in front of the Porto Turistico di Roma and the arrivals at the Marina di Nettuno offer a spectacular view of sails on the horizon, especially striking when the wind is strong. The docks of the two ports become natural observation points, with the clubs welcoming crews and the public.
Fiumicino, at the mouth of the Tiber, is not just Italy's air gateway; it is also a municipality deeply connected to seafaring, fishing, and recreational boating. The 30+Trenta fits into this maritime identity and enhances it, alongside other initiatives by the Circolo Velico, which has been active since the early eighties in promoting the region's sports and culture. For those visiting the coast south of Rome, watching the race is a direct way to understand how much the sea is part of the daily life of these cities.
The Circolo Velico Fiumicino and the Nettuno Yacht Club proposed an expanded 30+Trenta formula for 2026, spread over two weekends. The first leg, on May 9 and 10, took the fleet along the route connecting Fiumicino to the Porto Turistico di Riva di Traiano, covering about thirty miles. The second leg, on June 13 and 14, headed south, starting in front of the Porto Turistico di Roma and arriving in the afternoon in front of the Marina di Nettuno, followed by the return to Fiumicino on Sunday.
Saturday offered optimal wind conditions over the approximately twenty-eight miles of the course. In the Fiumicino-Nettuno section, the victory in corrected time went to Mai Tai Roa by Pino Stillitano, ahead of 1 Sail by Stefano Cassiani and Jolie Brise by Federico Ceccacci; the best real time was set by Adelante by Roberto Rosa in 3 hours and 42 minutes.
In the return section from Nettuno to Fiumicino, with lighter winds, Purchipetola, owned by Domenico Rega, prevailed in corrected time, followed by Jolie Brise by Federico Ceccacci — who also achieved the best real time in 5 hours, 27 minutes, and 53 seconds — and Cicci VII by Paolo Mirabile.
The award ceremony for the 2026 edition was held on Saturday, July 18, at 6:00 PM at the Circolo Velico Fiumicino headquarters, concluding a season that confirmed the collaboration between the two coastal clubs.
The Porto Turistico di Roma is located in Fiumicino, just minutes from Leonardo da Vinci Airport. By car, it can be reached via the Rome-Fiumicino motorway; by train, from the Fiumicino Airport station with bus connections to the port. Nettuno is served by the Rome Termini-Nettuno railway line.
Registration for the race is reserved for sailing vessels in accordance with the notice of race published by the Circolo Velico Fiumicino. For information on the notice, fees, and instructions, please contact the organizing club directly.
Viewing from the shore is free and open to everyone: the docks of the Porto Turistico di Roma and the Marina di Nettuno are the best spots. In case of adverse weather and sea conditions, the program may be subject to changes decided by the organizing committee.
