Two days of 19th-century historical re-enactments, taverns, and the Palio delle Contrade in Isola del Liri
For two days, the historic center of Isola del Liri, in the province of Frosinone, sheds its modern skin to dress in the attire of the 19th-century Ciociaria region. The 19th-Century Village Festival – Ancient Flavors of the Village is a widespread event that occupies squares, alleys, and overlooks on the Liri River: taverns set up like period shops, costumed performers, folk music moving from corner to corner, and a public that finds itself walking inside a living stage. The natural backdrop is what makes Isola del Liri unique throughout Lazio: the Cascata Grande, which plunges for about twenty meters right in the town center, at the foot of the Boncompagni-Viscogliosi castle.
The identity heart of the festival is the re-enactment of the 1799 Eccidio Isolano of May 12th, one of the most dramatic pages of local history, linked to the events that crossed the Kingdom of Naples at the end of the 18th century. The staging, curated by re-enactment groups and entrusted to dozens of performers, occupies Saturday afternoon and returns to the community an episode that the town has never stopped telling itself. Around this historical core also revolves the great evening concert dedicated to the Ballad of Fra Diavolo, the quintessential Ciociaria figure, a brigand and Bourbon officer who entered the popular legend of the Liri Valley.
The title of the event is not decorative: the gastronomic route is its backbone. Along the streets of the village, there are tasting stations dedicated to traditional 19th-century dishes, re-proposed according to Ciociaria peasant recipes, accompanied by local wines. It is a humble cuisine, made of legumes, handmade pasta, poultry, and wood-fired bread, which is served here in a context that also restores its gestures and environment.
The festival is promoted by the volunteer association Arcobaleno sul Liri ODV together with the Village Cafè, with the patronage of the Municipality of Isola del Liri and the local Pro Loco, and with the contribution of the Lazio Region and ARSIAL, the regional agency for agricultural development and innovation. It is a fact that explains well the dual nature of the event: on one hand, the enhancement of Lazio agri-food products, on the other, a social project built by an association that spends the rest of the year dealing with local solidarity.
The event takes place between late spring and the beginning of summer, with long hours covering the late afternoon and the entire evening on Saturday and the whole day on Sunday, until night. Admission is free; you only pay for what you consume at the tasting points and for paid attractions like the hot-air balloon. It is a festival that works very well for families, thanks to the afternoon slot dedicated to children, but which also knows how to speak to those arriving from outside the region looking for an authentic piece of Ciociaria: Isola del Liri is just over an hour and a half from Rome and lends itself well to a day trip, perhaps combined with a visit to the Casamari abbey or nearby Sora.
The 2026 edition of the 19th-Century Village Festival had a bumpy road: scheduled for the weekend of May 16 and 17, it was postponed to a later date due to adverse weather forecasts, by agreement between the municipal administration and the organizing association Arcobaleno sul Liri ODV. The new date, announced at the beginning of June, fell on Saturday, June 6, and Sunday, June 7, 2026.
The event, promoted by Arcobaleno sul Liri ODV and Village Cafè with the patronage of the Municipality of Isola del Liri and the Pro Loco and the contribution of the Lazio Region and ARSIAL, enlivened the historic center with historical re-enactments, traditional gastronomy, music, and shows. Local chronicles recorded a large turnout, with the village transformed into a 19th-century setting with attention to detail.
By car: A1 Rome-Naples motorway, Frosinone exit, then Frosinone-Sora expressway to Isola del Liri (about 25 km). From Rome, it takes approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes. By train: the reference station is Isola del Liri on the Roccasecca-Avezzano line, with connections from Rome Termini via Roccasecca. Nearest airports: Rome Ciampino and Rome Fiumicino.
The historic center is closed to traffic: park in the external areas and reach the village with the free shuttle service active for the entire duration of the event. The main places are Piazza SS. Triade, the River Park, and Ponte Roma, all within walking distance of each other.
Free admission to all areas and shows. Tastings of 19th-century dishes are paid for by consumption at the taverns set up along the route. The tethered hot-air balloon flight and carriage rides are paid attractions with a separate ticket, subject to weather conditions.
Comfortable shoes: the village is on a slope and the gastronomic route winds over several levels. For the hot-air balloon, it is advisable to arrive early, because queues form quickly at the opening of the evening flight windows. Do not miss, in any case, the view of the Cascata Grande illuminated after sunset.
