Ancient Traditions Festival

A festival that takes the village back in time

The Ancient Traditions Festival is the most anticipated event of the summer in Rocca d'Arce, a small town of just over a thousand inhabitants in the province of Frosinone, in the heart of the Ciociaria region and the Lazio region. Established in the early 2000s and reaching its twenty-first edition in 2024, the event traditionally takes place in the latter part of August, transforming the historic center for one night into an open-air museum dedicated to rural life.

Open cellars, wine, and Ciociaria cuisine

The main theme of the festival is the opening of the village cellars: residents throw open their doors, hallways, and basements—often carved directly into the rock—to welcome visitors with locally produced wine and traditional dishes. At the refreshment points set up along the alleys, you can find local specialties, from gnocchi alla ciociara to baked goods from wood-fired ovens, as well as cured meats and cheeses from Liri Valley producers.

Exhibitions, crafts, and memory

Alongside the food and wine, the festival offers a widespread exhibition. In the rooms and courtyards of the historic center, you will find displays of:

• farming tools and field implements that are no longer in use;
• vintage photographs documenting village life and emigration;
• traditional Ciociaria costumes and household objects from the rural past;
• demonstrations of ancient trades and artisanal techniques.

Many residents dress in period clothing and recreate scenes of daily life, from spinning wool to baking bread, turning the visit into a narrative journey rather than a simple walk.

Folk music in the alleys

The soundtrack of the evening is provided by folk music groups from southern Lazio, featuring the organetto, bagpipes, tambourines, and traditional Ciociaria songs. Performances do not take place on a single stage but move throughout the village, meeting the public in small squares and in front of the cellars.

A village worth the trip

The setting is an integral part of the experience. Rocca d'Arce is located at an altitude of about 500 meters on a spur overlooking the confluence of the Liri and Melfa rivers. This is where the ancient Arx Volscorum, the fortress of the Volsci, once stood, and you can still see the remains of the polygonal walls and the medieval castle. Also worth visiting are the church of San Bernardo, with frescoes of the Neapolitan school, and the medieval church of San Rocco.

The late August calendar

The Ancient Traditions Festival is part of a particularly busy period for the town. During the same days, the procession of the Madonna del Riparo takes place, which on August 24th leads the faithful from the Church of the Riparo to the Church of San Rocco, while the patron saint, San Bernardo, is celebrated on September 13th. For those visiting Ciociaria at the end of summer, the combination of secular festivities and religious rites offers an authentic glimpse into the culture of southern Lazio.

Visitor tips

The historic center is pedestrianized and hilly; comfortable shoes are recommended. In recent editions, the organizers have provided a shuttle service from the valley parking lot to the village, which is highly recommended as parking spaces at the top are limited. The festival takes place mostly outdoors and continues until late in the evening.
