A patronal feast in the heart of the Comino Valley

August 24th is the date all of Fontechiari awaits. The small municipality in the province of Frosinone, with just over 1,300 inhabitants overlooking the greenery of the Comino Valley, celebrates Saint Bartholomew the Apostle, its patron saint, on this day. It is an anniversary that has marked the end of the Fontechiari summer for generations and still draws those living away back to the village: the patron saint's feast remains the moment when the community gathers in full.

The village and its history

Fontechiari is a medieval village located at the gates of the Comino Valley, in that part of the Ciociaria that unites cultivated hills, springs, and ancient transit routes. Until 1862, the town was called Schiavi, a name that local tradition links to the presence of slaves belonging to the Arpino leader Gaius Marius. The new, brighter name instead evokes the clear waters that mark the territory. The parish church, dedicated to Saints John the Baptist and John the Evangelist, dates back to the 18th century and preserves 14th-century frescoes and a silver processional cross from the Sulmona school; not far away, the church of Madonna dei Fratelli houses a 13th-century wooden Christ.

The religious dimension

The patronal day opens in the sign of devotion: the solemn Eucharistic celebration in honor of the Apostle and the procession that crosses the streets of the historic center remain the most heartfelt moment, with the participation of the confraternities and the families of the town. Saint Bartholomew, one of the twelve apostles, is venerated throughout Italy on August 24th and is traditionally invoked as the protector of farming and artisan communities: a patronage that fits well with the rural identity of this corner of southern Lazio.

"Saint Bartholomew meets the folk night"

After the liturgical moment, the festival moves to Piazza G. Marconi, the town's open-air living room. Here, the evening titled "Saint Bartholomew meets the folk night" takes place, organized by the Municipal Administration together with the Pro Loco Fontechiari APS: live folk music, dancing in the square, food stalls, and a conviviality that lasts until late at night. It is the typical formula of Ciociaria patronal feasts, where the traditional repertoire — organetto, tarantellas, folk songs — accompanies the audience of all ages.

Inside the Fontechiari Summer

The Saint Bartholomew Festival is not an isolated event: it is the culmination of the Fontechiari Summer, the program that animates the municipality from July to August with evenings of live music, karaoke, card tournaments, art exhibitions, and gastronomic appointments, all with free entry. In the days immediately preceding, the Artinchiaro festival and the celebrations in honor of Saint Roch take place on August 23rd, also in Piazza G. Marconi: two consecutive days that effectively double the festival. The calendar then closes at the end of the month with "Fontechiari: tradition and peasant history" in the Colle Mastroianni area.

Participating means supporting a tradition that holds together religious ritual, folk music, and village identity in a territory marked by depopulation. Those arriving from outside will find a direct welcome and the chance to experience August 24th exactly as the locals do.
