The vertical mountain race through the trails of Val Chisone
The 1/2 KVR Roure is one of the most iconic mountain races in the Pinerolo area. It takes place in the municipality of Roure, a scattered village in the upper Val Chisone that encompasses the hamlets of Castel del Bosco, Roreto, Balma, and Villaretto, in the Metropolitan City of Turin, Piedmont. The acronym KVR stands for "Kilometro Verticale Roure": here, the distance is halved (hence the "1/2"), but the steepness remains typical of vertical races, where the only thing that matters is climbing as fast as possible.
The track measures 2.4 kilometers with 500 meters of positive elevation gain, climbing entirely along the trails that ascend the valley slopes. It is a distance that leaves no room for strategy: you start and push until the finish line, testing your legs and lungs on severe gradients. The time-trial format, with athletes starting at regular intervals, makes the race thrilling for both runners and spectators along the course.
The 1/2 KVR Roure is part of the Vertical delle Valli Circuit, which links the vertical races of Val Chisone, Val Germanasca, and Val Noce. Other stages of the circuit include the vertical races in Pinasca, Pomaretto, Massello, and Frossasco: each event awards points for the final circuit ranking, rewarding those who excel in this niche specialty. The event is organized by GSR Castel del Bosco, a local sports organization deeply rooted in the area, with the support of local valley associations.
The event attracts registered athletes and mountain running enthusiasts from all over Piedmont, but it is also a community gathering for Roure and the villages of Val Chisone. The natural setting—woods, trails, and panoramic views of the surrounding peaks—is an integral part of the experience: a few minutes of intense effort rewarded by an alpine landscape of great beauty. It is an opportunity to discover an authentic corner of the province of Turin, far from the most beaten tourist paths.
The 2026 edition of the 1/2 KVR Roure took place on June 10, 2026, with 75 classified athletes. The race was valid for the Vertical delle Valli Circuit, which brings together the half-vertical kilometer races of the Val Chisone, Val Germanasca, and Val Noce valleys.
In the men's category, Gianluca Ghiano (Baudenasca) won with a time of 17'54", fresh from the Off-Road Running European Championships; behind him were Emanuele Soggetti (GS Pomaretto, 19'25") and Andrea Barale (Atletica Roata Chiusani, 20'23"). In the women's field, Erica Zucalli (GS Pomaretto) took the win in 23'01", ahead of Gianfranca Attene (Torino Road Runners, 24'29") and Valentina Picca (Apple Run Team, 25'19").
2026 Winners: Gianluca Ghiano (17'54") for the men and Erica Zucalli (23'01") for the women, out of 75 classified athletes.
Roure is located in the upper Val Chisone, along the SS23 del Sestriere road, about an hour's drive from Turin. The meeting point and start times are announced each year by the organizers on the GSR Castel del Bosco website.
Registration is done online via the form provided by the organizers; participants must be registered with UISP Atletica Leggera, FIDAL, or hold a RUNCARD with a valid medical certificate. It is generally possible to register on the day of the race as well.
