The village festival of Massarella that transforms into an indie music event featuring Tuscan soup and free concerts
The Zuppa Festival in Massarella, a hamlet in the municipality of Fucecchio in the province of Florence, is one of the most beloved summer events in the lower Valdarno region. Established in 1971 by the local community, it has evolved into an appointment that bridges the gap between Tuscan peasant cooking and live music. Alongside the food stalls, the RB Festival (Reality Bites Festival) has become a staple, offering free concerts that have turned this local feast into a key reference point for the Italian indie and singer-songwriter scene.
The heart of the festival remains the zuppa, a humble yet iconic recipe of Tuscan cooking made with stale bread, cannellini beans boiled with sage and garlic, high-quality extra virgin olive oil, black kale, zucchini, cabbage, carrots, onions, celery, potatoes, and tomatoes. In addition to the soup, the stalls managed by the Contrada volunteers serve grilled meats, tortelli, and other local specialties. The kitchen opens every evening at 7:30 PM, while concerts kick off at 9:30 PM.
The event is spread over two weekends in July, featuring dinners in the square followed by live performances. This formula blends a traditional village fair with a music festival, attracting both locals and music enthusiasts in a balance that has become the event's trademark. The stage in Piazza XXIII Agosto, in the center of Massarella, hosts different artists every night, ranging from indie singer-songwriters to electronic acts, as well as evenings dedicated to local Massarella traditions and collective celebrations like big-screen projections.
The festival is organized by the Gruppo Spontaneo d'Iniziativa della Contrada Massarella in collaboration with La Limonaia of Fucecchio, two associations that have been enriching the village's cultural life for years. Admission to the concerts is free, a feature that makes the RB Festival accessible and deeply rooted in the area, attracting audiences from all over central Tuscany, including Florence, Pisa, and Empoli.
The 55th edition of the Zuppa Festival and RB Festival returns to Massarella di Fucecchio over two weekends in July: July 17-19 and July 24-26, 2026. The formula remains the same: dinner in Piazza XXIII Agosto with soup and other Contrada specialties, followed by free-entry concerts of the RB Festival. The kitchen opens every evening at 7:30 PM, and live sets begin at 9:30 PM. The program ranges from indie singer-songwriters to electronic and Latin music, all within the atmosphere of a village festival open to everyone.
Massarella is a hamlet of Fucecchio (FI), in the lower Valdarno. By car, it can be reached via the SS67 Tosco-Romagnola or the FI-PI-LI highway (exit Empoli or San Miniato), approximately 40 km from Florence and 40 km from Pisa. The nearest train stations are Fucecchio or San Miniato-Fucecchio, on the Florence-Pisa line.
Kitchen opens at 7:30 PM, concerts begin at 9:30 PM.
Concerts are free. Dinner is available for purchase at the Contrada food stalls.
We recommend arriving for dinner and staying for the live music. Seating in the square is limited during the busiest weekend evenings.
