The fragrant Etna citrus fruit celebrated in Calatabiano
The Zagara Bianca Lemon Festival in Calatabiano, in the province of Catania, is one of the most beloved spring festivals on the Ionian side of Mount Etna. Held in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele in the town center, the event revolves around a signature local product: the Zagara Bianca Lemon. This citrus fruit, recognizable by its brilliant white flowers, is grown in the orchards that blanket the Alcantara Plain at the foot of the volcano. Fragrant and rich in antioxidants, this lemon is more than just a fruit hereโit is a true gastronomic institution.
Calatabiano enjoys a privileged position between the Ionian Sea and the slopes of Mount Etna, where lush citrus and medlar groves define the landscape. The town's very name reflects its history: derived from the Arabic Kalaat-al-Bian, or "Castle of Bian," it is still overlooked by the ruins of its medieval castle today. It is within this setting, steeped in farming traditions and local identity, that the festival finds its roots.
The event offers a rich, family-friendly program:
The festival is not an isolated event; it is part of the Maggio Calatabianese, a calendar of celebrations dedicated to the patron saint San Filippo Siriaco. It takes place on the same day as the Medlar Festival, creating a doubly delicious experience featuring both citrus and seasonal fruits. It is the perfect opportunity to discover Calatabiano, its traditions, and the authentic flavors of the Etna region in a festive atmosphere that brings together residents and visitors alike.
The 2026 Zagara Bianca Lemon Festival was held on Sunday, May 10, in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, Calatabiano, from 11:30 AM to 9:00 PM. The edition was paired with the Medlar Festival, celebrated on the same day, for a double gastronomic appointment featuring citrus and seasonal fruits.
The square hosted gastronomic stalls with lemon-based tastings, live cooking demonstrations by local pastry chefs preparing lemon cream cake, artisan and local product markets, and folkloric and musical performances. The day was part of the Maggio Calatabianese calendar dedicated to the patron saint San Filippo Siriaco.
Event paired with the Medlar Festival on the same day, as part of the Maggio Calatabianese for San Filippo Siriaco.
