The five-district rowing regatta for Under-18 crews
The Youth Rowing Palio is one of the most anticipated events of the summer in Castiglione della Pescaia, a lively seaside town in the Maremma region, in the province of Grosseto, Tuscany. It is the race that officially opens the competitive season of the Castiglione Rowing Palio and is entirely dedicated to young people: the Under-18 crews of the village's five districts compete with oars. For the town, it is not just a sporting competition, but the moment when the oldest maritime tradition is passed from the adult generations to the youth.
As with the other races in the calendar, the Youth Palio features the five historic districts of Castiglione della Pescaia, each with its own colors and its own gozzo boat:
Each boat is a traditional gozzo, manned by four rowers and a coxswain, reminiscent of the fishing vessels once used along this stretch of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Wearing the colors of one's district and bringing the boat to the finish line is a source of pride for every family in Castiglione.
The Rowing Palio has its roots in the 1950s, when the village decided to transform its rowing vocation into a sporting competition, following the example of the nearby Palio of Porto Santo Stefano. For years, the races were held on the Bruna River; since 2009, due to safety reasons linked to the presence of five boats in a narrow channel, the regatta has moved to the open sea, with a spectacular finish inside the Port Channel. The youth category, dedicated to the Under-18s, was introduced in 1978 and has since represented the nursery of the Palio, the training ground where the future champions of the Assunta race grow up.
The regatta takes place in the stretch of water in front of the harbor, on a course that has become more technical in recent years: shortened lanes and numerous turns test the coordination and endurance of the young crews. The public follows the challenge from the quays and piers, amidst chants, flags, and the enthusiasm of the districts, in one of the most scenic settings in the Maremma. The Youth Palio inaugurates a summer calendar that continues with the Women's Palio, the prestigious Assunta Palio in August, and the Veterans' Palio, making Castiglione della Pescaia a true capital of traditional Tuscan rowing.
The 2026 Youth Rowing Palio will be held on Saturday, July 18, starting at 7:00 PM. It is the race that inaugurates the calendar of the Palio of Castiglione della Pescaia and features the Under-18 crews of the five districts — Ponte Giorgini, Marina, Castello, Piazza, and Portaccia — on traditional boats with four rowers and a coxswain.
The regatta takes place in the stretch of water in front of the harbor, on a technical course with shortened lanes and numerous turns, and concludes with the arrival in the Port Channel. The following day, Sunday, July 19, will be the turn of the Women's Palio.
The youth race takes place in front of the harbor, with the finish in the Port Channel. The five districts compete on their respective boats: Delfino (Ponte Giorgini), Sbriglio (Marina), Rondine (Castello), Branzino (Piazza), and Storione (Portaccia).
Castiglione della Pescaia can be reached by car via the SS322 della Collacchie; the nearest train stations are Grosseto and Follonica, connected to the village by local buses. The nearest airport is Pisa.
The regatta is held in the stretch of water in front of the harbor, with the finish line in the Port Channel. The public can watch for free from the quays, piers, and the seafront.
During the Palio days, the village is very busy: it is advisable to arrive early and park in the areas outside the center. For updated information, you can contact the IAT Office (tel. +39 0564 933678).
