Nature awakens at the gates of Rome: free guided tours and workshops at the WWF Oasis
The WWF Oasis Spring is the major national campaign by WWF Italy that, every year between late April and early June, opens over one hundred protected areas across the country to the public. In the municipality of Rome, in the Lazio region, the event comes to life at the Castel Romano Affiliated Oasis, a patch of restored nature nestled in the Mediterranean scrub, just a few kilometers from the city center and right next to the Designer Outlet along the Via Pontina.
The Castel Romano Oasis is a beautiful example of environmental restoration: once an abandoned area, it has been reclaimed and transformed into a space dedicated to biodiversity, featuring approximately 1,500 meters of trails through holm oak, oak, and strawberry tree woods, thousands of nectar-bearing shrubs like sage and rosemary, natural play areas, and picnic spots. Foxes, porcupines, birds of prey like the kestrel and black kite, great spotted woodpeckers, frogs, and tortoises live along the paths, while protected wild orchids bloom in the spring. Two educational beehives house tens of thousands of bees, the stars of the workshops on pollinators.
During the weeks of the event, every Saturday, Sunday, and public holiday, WWF environmental educators lead visitors on free guided tours to discover the oasis's habitats, accompanied by thematic workshops designed especially for children and families. Each weekend has its own theme, from the awakening of nature to wetlands and amphibians, and from spring blooms to the day dedicated to the environment. It is a simple and precious opportunity to reconnect with nature without leaving Rome.
Admission to the oasis is free, and both the tours and workshops are complimentary, in full respect of the environment; booking is recommended for the workshops, given the growing participation of local families. The event is part of the national calendar of the WWF Italy Oasis Spring and confirms Castel Romano as one of the most convenient gateways to nature for those living in the Metropolitan City of Rome and the rest of Lazio.
For the 2026 Oasis Spring, the WWF Affiliated Oasis of Castel Romano opened its trails every weekend, from April 25 to June 2, with free guided tours and workshops led by WWF environmental educators. Each weekend was dedicated to a different theme, from the awakening of nature to the oasis's biodiversity. This edition coincided with the celebrations for the 60th anniversary of WWF Italy.
Admission and activities were free, with booking recommended for workshops dedicated to children and families.
Free guided tours every Saturday, Sunday, and public holiday at 10:00 AM and 11:00 AM; thematic workshops at 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM, starting from the entrance adjacent to parking lot C.
