Siena, the wine capital amidst art, historic palaces, and top labels
Wine & Siena – Masterpieces of Taste is the premier event that brings the very best of Italian food and wine to the heart of Siena, Tuscany, every late January. Launched in 2016 as an offshoot of the prestigious Merano WineFestival, the event is curated by Helmuth Köcher – founder of The WineHunter – and organized in collaboration with Confcommercio Siena. The format uniquely blends fine wines, culture, and artistic heritage, using the iconic landmarks of the city of the Palio as its stage.
The heart of the event is the Santa Maria della Scala Museum Complex, the ancient hospital overlooking Piazza del Duomo, and the adjacent Palazzo Squarcialupi. Over the years, the event has expanded to other spaces rarely accessible to the public: the Historic Aula Magna of the University of Siena, Palazzo Patrizi, the State Archives with the Museo delle Biccherne, and Palazzo Sansedoni, home to the Fondazione Monte dei Paschi. Sipping a glass of wine amidst frescoes and monumental halls is the experience that sets Wine & Siena apart from a standard wine fair.
The 2026 edition, the eleventh, brought together approximately 160 companies and over 700 products for tasting: wines, gastronomic specialties, spirits, and craft beers. The stars of the show are the producers and labels awarded the The WineHunter Award, the recognition that selects the excellence admitted to the event. Among the most anticipated novelties was the first collaboration with the Consorzio del Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and the presence of numerous Italian regions, testifying to the national scope of the event.
Alongside the tasting tables, the program offers The WineHunter masterclasses dedicated to specific themes – from Italian sparkling wines to great Champagnes, from Sangiovese verticals to a selection of Tuscan gins – led by experts and sommeliers. There are also The WineHunter Talks, moments of discussion on sustainability, innovation in the cellar, and international markets, as well as cultural initiatives that weave together wine, science, literature, and art with the contribution of professors from the University of Siena.
Wine & Siena is designed for both the general public and industry professionals. The weekend days are open to enthusiasts with a ticket, while the final day on Monday is traditionally reserved for buyers, operators, and the press, featuring B2B meetings and the presence of international buyers. The event thus confirms itself as a precious opportunity to promote the Sienese territory and Italian food and wine during a traditionally quiet time of year for city tourism.
