The final stage among the wild orchids of Monferrato, featuring a nature walk and a biodiversity conference
The Wild Orchid Stewardship Festival is a spring event spread across the villages of Monferrato and the Alessandria area, celebrating the wild orchids of Piedmont every year. Promoted by the Po Piedmont Protected Areas Management Authority, the festival runs from April to June through the Casale, Asti, and Apennine regions bordering Liguria, concluding right here in Ponzano Monferrato, in the Province of Alessandria. It is here, in one of the network's guardian municipalities, that the curtain falls on the flowering season.
Ponzano Monferrato is one of the three founding municipalities of the project, along with Camagna Monferrato and Terruggia: territories chosen for the extraordinary richness of wild orchids that grow on their hills. In spring, its gentle slopes, uncultivated meadows, and woodland edges host numerous fragile and protected wild species, making this corner of Monferrato a small treasure chest of biodiversity.
The Ponzano day combines two souls of the festival. On one hand, a guided walk accompanied by experts to discover the local wild orchids: an opportunity to learn how to recognize and observe them without causing damage. On the other, an in-depth conference on biodiversity, a moment of reflection that closes the festival and gathers the legacy of the weeks of walks, exhibitions, and meetings held in the other Monferrato municipalities.
At the heart of the event is the concept of stewardship: an invitation to citizens to voluntarily take care of the patches of nature that surround them. Born within the European project Life Orchids and continued with LIFE NatConnect2030, the "orchid stewards" network involves volunteers committed to protecting these species through conservation agreements, micro-reserves, and habitat restoration interventions in their own territory.
Although it finds its finale in Ponzano Monferrato, the festival is a choral event that crosses the entire hilly Piedmont region, from Montecastello to Pecetto di Valenza, from Piovera to Cartosio, with dozens of appointments. For those who love nature, botany, and the Monferrato landscape, the Ponzano stage is the ideal opportunity to combine an outdoor walk with the discovery of a still little-known natural heritage.
Ponzano Monferrato is located in the Province of Alessandria, in the heart of the Casale Monferrato area, a few kilometers from Casale Monferrato. By car, it can be reached from the A26 motorway (Casale Sud exit) and the provincial roads that wind through the hills. The hamlet of Salabue, where events are often concentrated, is just a few minutes from the town center.
The walk takes place on hilly paths: comfortable clothing and hiking shoes are recommended. It is important to respect the flowers and not pick them, as wild orchids are a protected species.
