Three days of walks, meetings, and workshops on the city as an ecosystem, in Siena
The Widespread Sustainability Festival – EcoSistema Urbano is an event held in Siena, the capital of the province of the same name in Tuscany. Its distinctive feature is in the name itself: it is a widespread festival, without a single hub or vertical artistic direction, which transforms the city into a network of places and encounters. For three days, urban spaces, green areas, vegetable gardens, valleys, and nature reserves become stages where the focus is on the environment, community, and the future.
The event is promoted by the EcoSistema Urbano Siena group, created within the Municipality of Siena thanks to the participation of local entities, associations, and organizations committed to sustainability issues. Partners include the Fondazione MPS, the SART – Siena Art Institute, the Propositivo (PRO+) APS association, and TVspenta APS, as well as the Territorial Alliance for Carbon Neutrality Siena, which provides information on provincial decarbonization projects. The initiative is part of the projects funded by the Ministry of Culture under the PNRR – Next Generation EU framework.
The program weaves together different languages and audiences, with a particular focus on active citizen participation. Proposals range from guided nature excursions to workshops for children, scientific meetings to book presentations, and conferences on the city's environmental strategies.
The underlying idea is simple and powerful: to look at Siena as a true ecosystem, where the environment, people, and culture are part of a single balance. The central event, hosted on the San Domenico bastion of the Fortezza Medicea, focuses on this very vision, presenting the sustainability strategies launched by the Municipality. For those visiting Siena, it is a unique opportunity to discover the city: not just its squares and monuments, but also its green spaces and the network of entities working to make it more livable.
Almost all appointments are free to enter, with some activities requiring reservation. The festival is aimed at anyone wishing to experience Tuscany in a slow and conscious way, combining the beauty of the Sienese landscape with reflection on environmental, social, and economic sustainability.
The 2026 edition enlivened Siena from May 22 to 24 with widespread events in urban spaces and green areas. Between environment, science, and community, the festival involved families, students, and citizens in a three-day journey dedicated to sustainability.
The central event, "The city as an ecosystem", was held on Saturday, May 23 at 6:30 PM on the San Domenico bastion of the Fortezza Medicea, with the presentation of the EcoSistema Urbano Siena group and the results of the "Guess How to Act" project.
The Territorial Alliance for Carbon Neutrality Siena was also present with information material on provincial decarbonization projects.
The highlight was the meeting "The city as an ecosystem" on the San Domenico bastion of the Fortezza Medicea (Saturday, May 23, 6:30 PM), with the official presentation of the EcoSistema Urbano Siena group. Also noteworthy were the meeting "Ecology of happiness" with Prof. Stefano Bartolini and the nature walks in the green valleys of Siena.
Siena can be reached by car via the Florence-Siena highway (Siena exit) or the SS73 and SS223 roads. By train, Siena station is connected to Florence and Empoli; from the historic center, which is largely pedestrianized, you can easily get around on foot.
The events take place in various locations across the city: Fortezza Medicea, Boschetto di San Miniato, Palazzo del Capitano, Natural History Museum, Valle di Ravacciano, Casa dell'Ambiente, and other green spaces.
Most events are free; some activities require a reservation. Detailed program and contacts available at sienacomunica.it.
