A historical re-enactment of the ancient maritime rite of the Republic of Pisa
The Wedding of the Sea is a historical re-enactment held in Pisa, Tuscany, which brings to life one of the oldest and most fascinating rituals of the Pisan Maritime Republic. At the heart of the event is the symbolic gesture of casting a ring into the sea, with which the city ideally renews its marriage to the element upon which its power and wealth depended for centuries.
The ceremony has its roots in the Middle Ages, during the height of the Republic of Pisa, when the city dominated vast Mediterranean trade routes. The Wedding was a solemn celebration of its bond with and dominion over the sea. Few but precious sources pass down its memory: among them is the travel diary of Michel de Montaigne, who in 1581 described the rite as still alive in local tradition, though already in decline after Pisa fell under Florentine rule. The 15th-century Lamento di Pisa by Puccino d'Antonio also evokes a boat adorned with gold, accompanied by galleys, musicians, and nobles in celebration.
According to tradition, on July 6th, the feast day of Saint Peter, a procession would carry the relic of Pope Clement's blood from the Cathedral of Pisa to the Basilica of San Piero a Grado, continuing along the Arno to the sea, where the Archbishop would conclude the ceremony by casting a consecrated ring into the waves.
Since 2008, local historical associations have recovered this nearly forgotten tradition, presenting it annually as a re-enactment. The event is coordinated by the Compagnia dello Stile Pisano, in collaboration with the Compagnia di Calci, the Amici di Pisa Association, and other local historical groups. In 2026, the Deputazione dello Sposalizio del Mare was established, bringing together local associations to enrich the festival and rediscover its ancient devotional aspect.
The event takes place over several days, featuring presentations, guided tours of the evocative Basilica of San Piero a Grado, and preparatory moments. The highlight is the main day: the historical costume pageant departs from the center of Pisa and heads toward the river, where the river procession along the Arno takes place. Embarking at Scalo Roncioni, historical groups and performers reach Boccadarno, at the river's mouth near Marina di Pisa, where the symbolic gesture of casting the ring into the sea is renewed, followed by a traditional toast.
The Wedding of the Sea is an event that speaks of identity and memory, capable of transforming the city into an open-air stage between the Municipality of Pisa, its province, and the Tuscan sea.
The 2026 edition of the Wedding of the Sea opens on Friday, July 3, with the presentation of the event at the Logge di Banchi. On Saturday, July 4, a guided tour of the Basilica of San Piero a Grado is scheduled, while on Sunday, July 5, a sports walk along the Lungarni departs from the Cittadella. The highlight is Monday, July 6: the sung Mass at the Basilica of San Piero a Grado, the historical costume pageant, and the river procession that reaches Boccadarno from Scalo Roncioni for the ring-casting and the final toast.
Pisa is easily accessible by train (Pisa Centrale station) and by car via the A11 motorway and the FI-PI-LI expressway. Galileo Galilei Airport is just a few minutes from the center. Boccadarno and Marina di Pisa, the site of the final ceremony, are connected to the city center via the Lungarno and public transport.
The main event takes place on July 6th, with preparatory events in the preceding days.
Participation in public events and the procession is free. For guided tours and reservations: +39 340 8371799 - [email protected].
We recommend arriving early along the Lungarni to watch the historical pageant and reaching Boccadarno for the final ring-casting ceremony.
