The traditional summer forest festival of the volunteer firefighters in Monte Santa Caterina, Val Senales
The Waldfest der Freiwilligen Feuerwehr Katharinaberg is one of the most cherished summer events in the village of Katharinaberg (also known as Monte Santa Caterina), a small, sunny town nestled at an altitude of approximately 1,245 meters at the entrance to Val Senales, in the Municipality of Senales, Bolzano province (Trentino-Alto Adige). The German term Waldfest literally means "forest festival": a typical South Tyrolean tradition where the entire community gathers outdoors among meadows and trees for a day of music, good food, and fellowship.
The event takes place on the Festplatz Nischler Sand, the festival grounds that have hosted open-air events for the community of Monte Santa Caterina for decades. This green spot, surrounded by the peaks of the Ötztal Alps, has long been tied to the village's popular celebrations; the local brass band, the Musikkapelle Katharinaberg, has been organizing its concerts and summer festivals here for generations.
The festival is promoted by the Freiwillige Feuerwehr Katharinaberg, the local volunteer fire department. In South Tyrol, volunteer firefighters are a pillar of community life in every mountain village: beyond their rescue duties, they enliven social life with festivals and initiatives whose proceeds support the department's operations, equipment purchases, and fire station maintenance. The Waldfest is therefore not just a moment of leisure, but also a gesture of solidarity toward those who ensure the community's safety.
As in typical South Tyrolean Waldfeste, the day is marked by brass band music from local and neighboring villages, culinary specialties cooked on-site, and a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere. Guests eat and drink outdoors, enjoying South Tyrolean cuisine, grilled dishes, homemade desserts, and local beverages, while people of all ages gather to spend a summer Sunday together in the mountains of Val Senales.
The Waldfest is also a wonderful opportunity to visit Monte Santa Caterina, a village known for its parish church perched on a rocky spur at the entrance to the valley and for its landscape, which stretches from the orchards of Val Venosta to the alpine glaciers. Val Senales is world-famous for the discovery of Ötzi, the Iceman, and for the ancient tradition of sheep transhumance across the glaciers, recognized by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage.
The 2026 Waldfest of the volunteer firefighters of Katharinaberg/Monte Santa Caterina will be held on Sunday, July 19, 2026, on the Nischler Sand grounds, in the Municipality of Senales (BZ). The event, confirmed by the official municipal calendar, renews the traditional summer forest festival with music, South Tyrolean gastronomy, and open-air conviviality. The detailed program—including times, musical guests, and specialties—will be released by the organizers closer to the event.
Monte Santa Caterina/Katharinaberg can be reached by car from Val Venosta by driving up Val Senales (SP28) after the village of Naturno. The festival is held on the Festplatz Nischler Sand, near the village. In summer, the area is served by South Tyrol's public bus network.
As with traditional South Tyrolean village festivals, admission is generally free; food and drinks are available on-site. For updated schedules and details, it is recommended to check the event calendar of the Municipality of Senales or contact the Katharinaberg volunteer firefighters.
