A night of performances, music, and open museums in the heart of the Etruscan city
The Volterra White Night is one of the most anticipated summer events in this Etruscan town in the province of Pisa, Tuscany. For one evening, the entire historic centerโenclosed within its double ring of Etruscan and 13th-century wallsโbecomes a sprawling stage: from 6:00 PM until 2:00 AM, the squares, alleys, and theater host shows, live music, exhibitions, and activities for all ages. It is the night when Volterra never sleeps, illuminated and bustling with thousands of visitors and residents.
The program spreads entertainment to every corner of the city. Roving music guides visitors from one square to another, with street bands, traveling orchestras, and musicians creating a continuous soundscape. The Theater hosts evening shows, while the central squares provide the backdrop for performances and street art. The streets remain lively thanks to the late-night opening of shops and artisan workshops, in a festive atmosphere that combines commerce, culture, and conviviality.
The heart of the White Night is the special free opening of the civic museums, accessible with continuous hours until midnight. Highlights include:
In addition, there are exhibitions set up at the Palazzo dei Priori, the oldest town hall in Tuscany.
The White Night is more than just entertainment: it is a way to rediscover the identity of Volterra, an Etruscan city-state and the capital of alabaster. Walking at night between the illuminated Palazzo dei Priori, the bell tower, and the open museums means traversing millennia of history in just a few hundred meters. The event is promoted by the Municipality of Volterra in collaboration with local trade associations and the city's commercial sector, confirming a festival deeply rooted in the Pisan community.
Participation in the White Night is free: access to the historic center, performances in the squares, and civic museums during the evening requires no ticket. A precious opportunity to experience one of Tuscany's most evocative art cities in a festive, nocturnal guise.
The Volterra White Night 2026 will take place on Saturday, July 18, bringing the historic center to life from 6:00 PM until 2:00 AM. The evening's structure, confirmed by the Municipality of Volterra, includes performances in the squares and the Theater, roving music through the streets, exhibitions at Palazzo dei Priori, and late-night shop openings.
The highlight of the event will once again be the special free opening of the civic museums, accessible continuously until midnight: the Guarnacci Etruscan Museum, the Art Gallery with a visit to the restoration site of Rosso Fiorentino's Deposition, and the Alabaster Ecomuseum with guided tours.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition, including shows, musicians, and precise times, will be published by the Municipality of Volterra in the weeks preceding the event.
Volterra is located in the hinterland of the province of Pisa. By car, it can be reached via the SS68 (take the Colle di Val d'Elsa exit from the Florence-Siena highway, or from Cecina along the coast). The reference train station is Saline di Volterra, connected to the historic center by bus; alternatively, use the Cecina or Pontedera stations with bus service.
The historic center is largely pedestrianized; it is best to use the parking lots just outside the walls and continue on foot.
Admission to the event and civic museums during the evening is free. Approximate hours: from 6:00 PM to 2:00 AM, with museums open until midnight.
Wear comfortable shoes for the cobblestone streets of the center and plan a gastronomic stop at the local shops and eateries.
