About Volterra Roman Theatre Festival

Every summer, the Roman Theatre of Vallebona—a 1st-century BC archaeological gem at the foot of Volterra—transforms into an open-air stage where classical myth meets contemporary drama. The Volterra International Roman Theatre Festival weaves together theatre, music, dance, and jazz within these ancient ruins, turning the stones themselves into the scenery. The festival showcases national and international premieres, prestigious guests, and the renowned 'Ombra della Sera' award in the heart of Etruscan Tuscany.

A festival amidst the stones of the Roman theatre

The Volterra International Roman Theatre Festival is one of Tuscany's most evocative summer theatrical events. The festival takes place in the Vallebona archaeological area, home to the Roman theatre of Volterra, built in the 1st century BC and one of the best-preserved in Northern Italy. In this millennial setting, the ancient tiers and stone stage become an integral part of the performance: contemporary art breathes life into myth, and the stones themselves serve as a natural backdrop.

A multidisciplinary festival

Founded in 2003, the festival has grown edition after edition to become a landmark event on the national scene. The program is intentionally multidisciplinary and includes:

  • Classical theatre, featuring major Greek and Latin tragedies and comedies;
  • Contemporary drama and new productions;
  • Music, from classical to jazz, with live ensembles and concerts;
  • Dance and physical theatre;
  • Literary meetings and book presentations.

The Ombra della Sera Award

Each edition of the festival presents the 'Ombra della Sera' awards, a recognition named after the famous Etruscan statuette housed in the Guarnacci Museum of Volterra. The award is presented to figures from the world of culture and entertainment who have distinguished themselves for their artistic contribution.

Volterra, a city of art between Etruscans and Romans

The festival is deeply rooted in the identity of Volterra, a city in the province of Pisa, Tuscany, which guards a layered history blending Etruscan, Roman, and medieval heritage. Attending a show in the Roman theatre is a unique experience, immersed in a landscape of hills and gullies, just a short walk from the historic centre, alabaster workshops, and ancient walls. The event is held under the aegis of the Municipality of Volterra and with the patronage of the Tuscany Region.

A summer of theatre under the stars

For over a month, from July to August, Volterra comes alive with audiences, artists, and enthusiasts from all over Italy and abroad. The evening performances, set against the stone backdrop of the Roman theatre illuminated under the Tuscan sky, offer an unrepeatable atmosphere where classical tradition engages with contemporary creativity.
