Theatre, music, and dance amidst the ancient stones of Volterra's Roman theatre
The Volterra International Roman Theatre Festival is one of Tuscany's most evocative summer theatrical events. The festival takes place in the Vallebona archaeological area, home to the Roman theatre of Volterra, built in the 1st century BC and one of the best-preserved in Northern Italy. In this millennial setting, the ancient tiers and stone stage become an integral part of the performance: contemporary art breathes life into myth, and the stones themselves serve as a natural backdrop.
Founded in 2003, the festival has grown edition after edition to become a landmark event on the national scene. The program is intentionally multidisciplinary and includes:
Each edition of the festival presents the 'Ombra della Sera' awards, a recognition named after the famous Etruscan statuette housed in the Guarnacci Museum of Volterra. The award is presented to figures from the world of culture and entertainment who have distinguished themselves for their artistic contribution.
The festival is deeply rooted in the identity of Volterra, a city in the province of Pisa, Tuscany, which guards a layered history blending Etruscan, Roman, and medieval heritage. Attending a show in the Roman theatre is a unique experience, immersed in a landscape of hills and gullies, just a short walk from the historic centre, alabaster workshops, and ancient walls. The event is held under the aegis of the Municipality of Volterra and with the patronage of the Tuscany Region.
For over a month, from July to August, Volterra comes alive with audiences, artists, and enthusiasts from all over Italy and abroad. The evening performances, set against the stone backdrop of the Roman theatre illuminated under the Tuscan sky, offer an unrepeatable atmosphere where classical tradition engages with contemporary creativity.
The 24th edition of the Volterra International Roman Theatre Festival is held from July 11 to August 8, 2026, at the Roman theatre of Vallebona. The programme alternates between classical theatre, contemporary drama, music, and dance.
Among the announced performances: 'Un Uomo Una Città' (July 16, 9:30 PM, free admission), a tribute to Enrico Fiumi on the 50th anniversary of his death; Euripides' 'Medea' (July 17); 'Amore Toscano' (July 20); 'Guerriere in Nome di...' (July 21); 'Del Labirinto e Altre Storie' (July 22); and 'Le Lacrime delle Donne' (July 23). Performances generally begin at 9:30 PM.
The edition is directed by Simon Domenico Migliorini and organized by the Associazione Culturale Progetto Città ETS, with the patronage of the Municipality of Volterra and the Tuscany Region.
