Nerd culture and fantasy take over the Etruscan city
Every spring, the historic center of Volterra (Province of Pisa, Tuscany) transforms into a world populated by superheroes, wizards, vampires, and characters straight from the pages of comic books. Volterra Comics & Fantasy is the event that brings pop culture, cosplay, and fantasy to the city's medieval walls, utilizing a unique setting: the ancient Etruscan and medieval streets become the perfect backdrop for cosplayers' photoshoots and the most evocative settings.
The event is spread across several areas in the heart of the city. The Cosplay Arena is the beating heart of the festival, where cosplayers compete in the famous costume contest with spectacular performances. The Beat Arena hosts live musical performances, with bands and artists reinterpreting iconic pop culture soundtracks and original tracks. The Comics Today space is dedicated to auteur comics, featuring presentations, previews, and meet-and-greets with illustrators and writers.
The highlight of the festival is the Cosplay Contest, which rewards the best costume interpretations with prizes in categories such as Best Male, Best Female, Best Duo, and Best Performance. Alongside the parades, there are performances by K-pop crews, live concerts, free manga drawing lessons, retro gaming areas, and stands featuring comics, manga, and collectible gadgets.
Founded in 2014, the festival was awarded at ITALIVE 2014 as the best event for young people and has established itself over the years as one of the most beloved appointments in the Tuscan nerd calendar. Organized by the Etruria Pro association, it maintains an intimate and high-quality atmosphere, far from large commercial trade shows, and succeeds in showcasing the artistic heritage of Volterra.
With free admission and a program designed for enthusiasts of all ages, Volterra Comics & Fantasy is the ideal opportunity to spend a day immersed in art, fantasy, and fun, while discovering one of Tuscany's most fascinating art cities, famous for its alabaster and its extraordinary Etruscan historic center.
The twelfth edition of Volterra Comics & Fantasy brought the historic center of Volterra to life on May 23-24, 2026, drawing thousands of visitors to Piazza dei Priori and the streets of the Etruscan city. The edition recorded further growth compared to previous years, confirming the event as one of the most beloved appointments in the Tuscan nerd scene.
Among the distinctive elements of this edition was the Bud Spencer Memorial, marking the tenth anniversary of Carlo Pedersoli's passing, featuring the display of the Dune Buggy inspired by the famous film. The 2026 poster featured original Cyborg artwork by Paolo Bucciantini. There was also plenty of space for the K-pop crew RIOT, live concerts, free manga drawing lessons, and retro gaming areas.
Volterra is located in the hinterland of the Province of Pisa. By car, it can be reached via the SS68 (connecting to the SGC FI-PI-LI); ample parking is available at the gates of the historic center, which is largely pedestrianized. By train, the reference station is Saline di Volterra (connected to Cecina), from where you can continue by bus.
Entry to the event is free.
Volterra offers numerous accommodation facilities in the historic center and the surrounding area, from farmhouses in the Val di Cecina to city hotels. It is recommended to book in advance for the event weekend.
