Masks, parades, and festivities in the historic center of Giovanni Verga's hometown

The Vizzini Carnival is one of the most anticipated winter events in Vizzini, a town nestled in the Iblean hinterland of the Metropolitan City of Catania, Sicily. For several days, the historic center—famous as the home of writer Giovanni Verga—transforms into a grand open-air stage filled with masks, confetti, music, and fun.
The heart of the event lies in the masquerade parades that wind through the village's streets and squares. Children, teenagers, families, and organized groups don colorful, imaginative costumes, creating a lively and engaging procession. The festivities are complemented by musical entertainment and street dancing that keep the energy high until evening.
One of the most awaited moments is the best mask and costume competition. Each year, participants put great effort into creating original and detailed outfits, blending artisanal creativity with the characteristic irony of the Sicilian Carnival.
Organized by local associations, including the Pro Loco of Vizzini, the Carnival retains a genuine, community-focused spirit. It is designed primarily for families and children, yet it succeeds in involving the entire town in a shared celebration of local folk traditions.
Visiting Vizzini during Carnival is also a perfect opportunity to discover a village rich in history and charm. Its alleys, staircases, churches, and palaces tell the story of a past that inspired the pages of Verga's "Cavalleria Rusticana." Vizzini is located just a short distance from the main attractions of the Iblean Mountains and the province of Catania, set within a quintessential Sicilian landscape.
The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced. We recommend following the official channels of the Pro Loco and the Municipality of Vizzini for the updated program.
