About Visciano Festival

The Visciano Festival, also known as the 'Luglio Viscianese', is the grand patronal feast of Visciano, in the province of Naples, dedicated to Maria SS. Consolatrice del Carpinello. From the Flag Festival in June to the novena at the Sanctuary Basilica, and from the barefoot pilgrimage of the 'Battenti' to solemn processions and concerts in Piazza Lancellotti, the community experiences weeks of intense faith, music, and popular tradition that unite the entire Nola area.

A festival that spans the Visciano summer

The Visciano Festival, which most locals simply call the Luglio Viscianese, is the defining event for the town of Visciano, a small hillside community in the province of Naples, Campania, overlooking the Nola plain. The event is dedicated to Maria SS. Consolatrice del Carpinello and, according to tradition, takes place from the Friday of the second-to-last week of July until the following Thursday, featuring a calendar that blends ancient religious rites with a rich program of public entertainment.

The Flag Festival, the June prelude

The festive cycle begins in June with the Flag Festival, one of the most heartfelt moments of the year. The Festival Committee retrieves the banner dedicated to the Madonna from the home where it was kept and displays it at the residence of the current president; the following day, the flag is carried through the streets, neighborhoods, and alleys of the town, accompanied by a grand marching band. It is not merely a parade: it is the way devotion physically reaches every home and district, renewing the sense of community belonging.

The Sanctuary Basilica of Carpinello

The spiritual heart of the festival is the Sanctuary Basilica of Maria SS. Consolatrice del Carpinello, located in the center of Visciano. The name derives from the hornbeam tree (in local dialect, carpinello) under which, according to local tradition, the image of the Virgin was discovered. After the painting was found in the ancient abbey, Abbot Nicolò De Angelis decided in 1739 to rebuild the structure in a safer location in the town center. On December 11, 1986, the sanctuary was elevated to the dignity of a minor basilica. Today, it is managed by the Missionaries of the Divine Redemption, the religious family founded by Father Arturo D'Onofrio, a beloved figure to whom the square in front of the church is dedicated.

The pilgrimage of the Battenti

The most striking element of the festival is the march of the Battenti, organized by the association of the same name, which has been recognized since 1943. On the Monday of the festival, following a dawn mass celebrated where the flag is kept, over a thousand pilgrims set off barefoot and in silence for a penance walk of over twenty kilometers. The route touches the towns of the Nola area—Marzano, Liveri, San Paolo Belsito, Nola, and Schiava—before returning to the sanctuary in Visciano. Wearing white robes, red ribbons, and a medal with the image of the Madonna, women, men, young people, and children walk together, and the offerings linked to the flag's selection are donated to the 'Piccola Opera della Redenzione'.

Novena, votive float, and solemn processions

The religious program opens with the enthronement of the Madonna's statue in the sanctuary and the novena, ten days of Eucharistic celebrations, the Holy Rosary, and supplications to the 'Consolatrice', entrusted each year to the preaching of an invited bishop or religious figure. Among the most characteristic rites is the preparation of the musical votive float dedicated to the Virgin and, above all, the solemn procession, divided into two parts, which traverses the old and modern parts of the town on different days, accompanied by the traditional panegyric.

The public program: music, shows, and fireworks

Alongside the devotional dimension, the Festival Committee builds a public program each year that is highly anticipated throughout the Vesuvius and Nola area. Piazza Lancellotti hosts the major evening concert, which over the years has brought famous names of Italian and Neapolitan music to Visciano, as well as evenings of comedy, fashion, and dance. The marching band festival accompanies almost the entire duration of the festivities with groups from various regions, while the conclusion is entrusted to the spectacular fireworks display by specialized firms, one of the most followed in the territory.

A new committee every year

A unique feature of Visciano is that the festival has no fixed organization: every year, a new Festival Committee is formed, composed of volunteers who spend twelve months collecting the necessary funds, house by house, to finance celebrations, illuminations, concerts, and fireworks. It is a mechanism of popular participation that explains the scale of the event: in Visciano, the festival is not organized for the community, but by the community.

Visciano Festival — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the festivities in honor of Maria SS. Consolatrice del Carpinello was organized by the 2026 Festival Committee, chaired by Umberto Santorelli. It opened with the Flag Festival on June 20-21, continued in July with the novena preached by Msgr. Giovanni Tonucci, the two parts of the solemn procession on July 19 and 21, and a public program in Piazza Lancellotti that culminated in the free concert by Francesco Renga on July 22.

The 2026 Festival Committee, led by president Umberto Santorelli, opened the festive year with the Flag Festival on June 20 and 21: retrieval of the banner on Via Montedonico, display on Via Trieste, and a tour of the town streets accompanied by the 'Vieni a suonare con noi' marching band.

In July, the Sanctuary Basilica hosted the novena, which began on Friday the 10th with the enthronement of the statue and was preached by Msgr. Giovanni Tonucci, Archbishop-Prelate Emeritus of Loreto. On Sunday, July 19, the first part of the solemn procession took place; Monday the 20th was the day of thanksgiving with evening Eucharistic adoration; and Tuesday the 21st featured the second part of the procession with the traditional panegyric.

On the public side, Piazza Lancellotti hosted the Visciano Summer Festival - Excellence Award in honor of the Madonna del Carpinello, a memorial dedicated to Father Arturo D'Onofrio curated by actor and director Angelo Iannelli, and the first edition of the Visciano Summer Fashion, an evening of fashion, music, dance, and theater with designer Patrizia Lieto and the Afragola Fashion Institute. The grand finale took place on Wednesday, July 22, with a free concert by Francesco Renga.
