The Votive Soup for the Madonna della Catena in the village of ceramics and bells

The Virgineddi Festival is one of the most heartfelt events in Burgio, a small medieval village perched on the hills of the Sicani lands in the province of Agrigento, in the heart of Sicily. The festival is rooted in the cult of the Madonna della Catena: according to tradition, when the faithful invoked the Virgin during difficult times and their prayers were answered, they would fulfill their vow by preparing a special soup to share with friends, neighbors, and relatives. Historically, the dish was offered exclusively to the neighborhood children, known in the local dialect as virgineddi (the little ones), from whom the soup and the festival take their name.
The heart of the festival is the virgineddi soup, a rustic dish from the Sicilian peasant tradition made with simple, seasonal ingredients: tenerumi (the leaves of the long zucchini), cabbage, zucchini, dried fava beans, and lentils, all cooked with pasta. It is a dish that speaks to the agricultural heritage of the Sicani Mountains and the deep, quintessentially Sicilian bond between food, faith, and community. During the festival, the soup is distributed for free along long tables, and portions are also taken to those unable to attend in person, keeping the spirit of sharing from the original vow alive.
The evening takes place in Piazza della Vittoria, the town center, where long outdoor tables are set up. The traditional meal is accompanied by live music, folk dances, and songs: recent editions have featured the "Cittร di Agrigento" Folk Group, which enlivened the festivities with traditional Sicilian music and dance. Local stories and anecdotes are shared, making the festival a moment of collective memory as well as conviviality.
The festival is also an opportunity to discover Burgio, known as the "city of ceramics and one hundred portals." The village is part of the national network of Ceramics Cities and houses the only bell foundry still active in Sicily, dating back to the late 15th century. The event is organized by the Municipality of Burgio together with the Pro Loco Sikania and is part of the regional circuit "The Paths of Long-Life Food," which promotes dishes and food traditions linked to the longevity of Sicilian communities.
The Virgineddi Festival is traditionally held in early August. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced: it is recommended to check the channels of the Municipality of Burgio and the Pro Loco Sikania for the final program.
The Virgineddi Festival returns to Burgio in the summer of 2026 to renew the ancient custom of the votive soup for the Madonna della Catena. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced: the event is traditionally held in the first days of August in Piazza della Vittoria. The detailed program, including times and guests, will be communicated by the Municipality of Burgio and the Pro Loco Sikania in the weeks leading up to the event.
Burgio is located in the hinterland of the province of Agrigento, in the Sicani Mountains. By car, it can be reached via the SS115 and the provincial roads that climb the Sosio-Verdura Valley; the nearest airport is Palermo's "Falcone-Borsellino," about a two-hour drive away. There is no direct train connection to the village.
The long tables and performances are held in Piazza della Vittoria, in the town center.
The distribution of the soup is traditionally free. For times, programs, and updated details, it is recommended to follow the official channels of the Municipality of Burgio and the Pro Loco Sikania.
