The patronal feast of Caltabellotta, blending faith, legend, and rural tradition
The San Pellegrino Festival is the most heartfelt religious and popular celebration in Caltabellotta, a picturesque village in the Province of Agrigento perched over 900 meters high in the Sicani Mountains of Sicily. Dedicated to the town's patron saint, the festival traditionally takes place in mid-August, drawing worshippers and devotees from neighboring towns. It weaves together spiritual life with the rhythms of the rural culture that has shaped this inland Agrigento territory for centuries.
According to tradition, San Pellegrino arrived from Greeceโsent, as the legend goes, by Saint Peter to evangelize Sicilyโand became the first bishop of ancient Triocala, the name by which Caltabellotta was known in antiquity. Popular lore links him to the famous legend of the dragon: the saint is said to have freed the town from a fearsome creature by imprisoning it in a cave on the cliff. Today, visitors can still admire the Hermitage of San Pellegrino, built around the 17th century, which incorporates the very caves where the saint is said to have lived, located on the village's second-highest peak.
The celebrations begin on August 16th with a triduum in honor of the patron saint, featuring moments of prayer, the Holy Rosary, and masses in the places most dear to the people of Caltabellotta.
Alongside the religious celebrations, the festival maintains a strong bond with the agricultural and pastoral world of Caltabellotta. During the festivities, a fair is held to honor the village's farming roots, while musical events and entertainment liven up the evenings. It is the perfect opportunity to discover one of the most fascinating centers in the Sicilian hinterland, with its panoramic views of the Sicani and the charm of the hermitage suspended on the rock.
The dates for the 2026 edition of the San Pellegrino Festival in Caltabellotta are confirmed: the festivities will be held from August 16th to 18th, 2026. As per tradition, the triduum will open the celebrations on August 16th, the candlelight procession with the saint's relics will accompany the translation to the sanctuary on August 17th, and on August 18th, the Solemn Mass and the evening procession of the wooden statue will take place, accompanied by the brass band and fireworks.
The detailed 2026 program, including the times of the celebrations and the evening musical and entertainment events, will be announced by the organizers in the weeks preceding the festival.
Caltabellotta is located in the hinterland of the Province of Agrigento, in the Sicani Mountains. By car, it can be reached from Sciacca (about 20 km) via provincial roads; the most convenient airport is Palermo, about 2 hours away.
The festivities take place every year in mid-August, with the climax on August 18th, the patron saint's day.
The village is perched at a high altitude: wear comfortable shoes for the uphill streets and for reaching the hermitage. In the evening, the temperature at this altitude can be cool, even in August.
