The grand summer feast of the Patriarch in the ceramic village of the Sicani Mountains
The Saint Joseph Festival is one of the most cherished traditions in Burgio, a small town in the province of Agrigento nestled on a hill overlooking the Verdura River, in the heart of the Sicani Mountains Park. Known as the village of ceramics and home to the only ancient bell foundry still active in Sicily, Burgio preserves in this festival one of the most authentic expressions of its religious and folk identity.
Devotion to the Patriarch Saint Joseph is expressed in two distinct moments of the year. The first is the liturgical observance on March 19th, preceded by a week of rosaries and holy masses, tied to the tradition of the Saint Joseph tables: votive banquets laden with seasonal fruit, vegetables, savory dishes, and traditional sweets like pignolata, vucciddati, gnucculuna, and frittatas made with cardoons, fennel, artichokes, and fava beans. The second, and more spectacular, is the grand outdoor festival in August, when the village welcomes the many emigrants who return for the occasion.
The summer festival opens with the traditional brass band parade through the town streets and culminates in the solemn procession of the Holy Family statue, a 17th-century wooden group that travels through the historic center accompanied by a large crowd of faithful. Surrounding the religious event is a rich program of popular activities:
The bond between Burgio and Saint Joseph is rooted in the Church of Saint Joseph, a splendid example of baroque architecture enriched with frescoes and rococo stuccoes, which houses the wooden statues of the Holy Family carried in procession. The festival thus intertwines faith, art, and popular tradition, offering visitors a genuine glimpse into the culture of small Sicilian inland towns.
Participating in the Saint Joseph Festival means discovering a Sicani Mountains village far from mass tourism circuits, where the patronal feast remains an authentic communal moment. Between the procession, music, games, and traditional flavors, it is the ideal opportunity to combine a visit to Burgio's ceramic heritage with the warm atmosphere of a Sicilian summer festival.
The 2026 Saint Joseph Festival in Burgio is divided into the two usual moments: the liturgical observance on March 19th, with the week of rosaries, holy masses, and the blessing of the Saint Joseph table, and the grand outdoor festival on August 16-17. The latter represents the heart of the celebration, with the solemn procession of the Holy Family statue, popular events, and concerts in Piazza Umberto I.
At the moment, the organizing committee has confirmed the dates but has not yet released the full program of August events: the detailed calendar of the procession, tournaments, breaking of the pots, sausage feast, and musical shows will be released in the weeks leading up to the festival.
Burgio is located in the inland area of the Agrigento province, in the Sicani Mountains. By car, it can be reached via the SS 386 and the provincial roads connecting Ribera and Sciacca; the most convenient train station is in Ribera, on the coastal line, from which you can continue by road transport. The reference airports are Palermo and Trapani.
The liturgical observance is celebrated on March 19th; the grand outdoor festival takes place in mid-August. Events and the procession are concentrated in the historic center and Piazza Umberto I.
Religious and popular events are free to attend. In summer, it is advisable to book accommodation in the surrounding area (Ribera, Sciacca) in advance and take advantage of the visit to discover the ceramic workshops and the bell foundry of Burgio.
