The Pala Pear Days in the medieval town of Glorenza, in the Vinschgau Valley
The Vinschger Palabira Tage (in English Pala Pear Days) are the autumn highlight that brings Glorenza/Glurns—the smallest town in South Tyrol, nestled in the upper Vinschgau Valley—to life every September. For about two weeks, the entire medieval village, with its perfectly preserved walls and iconic towers, transforms into a stage dedicated to the Palabirne, an ancient and rustic pear variety typical of the valley.
The Palabirne is a pear with rough, leathery skin and a grainy flesh, boasting an intense aroma reminiscent of caramel and cinnamon. Historically, it was primarily dried and used in traditional Christmas pastries, and in times of hardship, it even served as a coffee substitute. The festival was established to showcase this iconic fruit, now a symbol of Vinschgau's rural culture, and to rediscover its culinary potential.
The event is not just a single day, but a widespread calendar of appointments throughout September:
The highlight is the Palabirasunnta, the thanksgiving Sunday for the harvest. After Holy Mass and the procession through the streets of the center, the community gathers in the festival area to celebrate together with traditional specialties like Palabira-Greascht and Palabirnen-Schmarren, music, children's entertainment, and a market. The event has been organized for years with the involvement of the Glorenza Volunteer Fire Department.
Visiting the Palabira Tage is also the perfect opportunity to discover Glorenza, one of the most charming villages in the Alps. Remaining almost unchanged since the 16th century, the town preserves its complete city walls, three gate towers, and the famous Logge (arcades), the ancient commercial heart of the town. The event is promoted by Glurns Marketing, in collaboration with the agricultural and cultural entities of the Vinschgau Valley, in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, Trentino-South Tyrol.
The dates are confirmed: from September 5th to 20th, 2026, the town of Glorenza dedicates two weeks to the Pala pear with events spread throughout the historic center and the Vinschgau Valley region.
The program kicks off on Saturday, September 5th (10:00 AM - 5:00 PM) with the themed market under the arcades, where you can purchase Palabira pears and derivative products. This is followed, on September 11th and 12th, by the mountain agriculture festival featuring screenings, round tables, music, and regional cuisine. On September 13th, the Morgenerwachen sunrise hike is scheduled (meeting in the historic center). On September 16th, it's time for Glurns Cooks, with chefs reinterpreting the Pala pear in creative ways.
Grand finale on Sunday, September 20th with the Palabirasunnta: Holy Mass, procession, and harvest festival with traditional specialties, music, and entertainment for the little ones.
Glorenza is located in the upper Vinschgau Valley (Province of Bolzano). By car: take the A22 motorway exit at Bolzano Sud, then follow the Vinschgau Valley state road (SS38/SS40) towards Malles/Glorenza. By train: take the Vinschgau railway line to Malles or Spondigna, then continue by local bus to Glorenza.
The market and the Palabirasunnta are free to access; for some events (hikes, Glurns Cooks), booking is required. Information available from Glurns Marketing, tel. +39 0473 831288, [email protected].
September in the mountains can be cool: layered clothing is recommended, especially for the sunrise hike. Park outside the walls and explore the center on foot.
