The autumn cattle drive from the Prader Alm to Prato allo Stelvio

The Prader Almabtrieb is the most cherished autumn event in Prato allo Stelvio (Prad am Stilfserjoch), a municipality in the Vinschgau Valley, province of Bolzano, in the heart of the Trentino-Alto Adige region. The Almabtrieb—the descent of livestock from high pastures—marks the end of the summer season spent at altitude: from July to September, cows graze on the meadows of the Prader Alm at 2,273 meters within the Stelvio National Park, returning to the valley floor in a colorful and festive procession.
The autumn transhumance is an ancient rite of the South Tyrolean Alps. The cows are adorned with floral crowns, small mirrors, and large decorative cowbells, signaling that the alpine summer has concluded without incident. The procession descends along the mountain trail and crosses the village to the Kleinen Mösel meadows, a green area on the outskirts of town where the festivities take place. Along the route, the Goaßlschnalzer—experts in the traditional cracking of long whips—accompany the arrival of the animals.
The event is organized by the Bauernjugend Prad, the local young farmers' association, which manages hospitality, catering, and entertainment throughout the day. It is an event that strengthens the bond between new generations and the valley's farming culture, keeping alive a tradition that unites agricultural work, celebration, and village identity.
The day typically begins with a Frühschoppen, a morning aperitif accompanied by folk music, while awaiting the arrival of the livestock in the early afternoon. There are also performances by the Schuhplattler Prad, the typical Tyrolean dances characterized by rhythmic clapping on leather breeches and shoes. The party continues in the marquee with:
