Two days exploring the wineries of Panzano in Chianti, Italy's first organic wine district
Nestled in the most prestigious hills of Tuscany, in Panzano in Chiantiโa village in the municipality of Greve in Chianti, in the province of FlorenceโVino al Vino in Cantina comes to life every spring, standing as one of the region's most beloved wine tourism events. For two days, winery doors swing open to visitors, transforming the village and its surrounding countryside into a sprawling, immersive tasting experience. This is not a typical town-square fair, but a genuine journey into the cellar: you visit the producers, walk through the vineyards, listen to family stories, and taste wine exactly where it is born.
The event is organized by the Union of Panzano Winemakers, an association of twenty-three producers that has made this corner of Chianti a unique case study in Italy. The heart of the event lies in the four thematic routes that guide visitors through the fifteen participating wineries, scattered across the slopes and valleys surrounding Panzano:
Each route can be explored at your own pace, choosing wineries based on your personal curiosity. The map provided with the tasting kit helps you navigate the white gravel roads and estates of Chianti.
What makes Panzano special is its collective commitment to organic viticulture: approximately 90% of the vineyards in the area are cultivated according to organic farming principles, and it is here that Italy's first organic wine district was born. Participating in Vino al Vino in Cantina means not only tasting great Chianti Classico but also gaining an intimate look at an environmentally respectful production model, explained directly by those who work the land.
The "in-cellar" format, held in spring, is the itinerant version of the event and distinguishes itself from the autumn "in-square" edition. For wine lovers and those looking to discover the most authentic side of Tuscany, it is the perfect opportunity to combine high-quality tastings, rolling hills, and the warm hospitality of Chianti families, just a short distance from Florence and Siena.
The 2026 edition of Vino al Vino in Cantina was held in Panzano in Chianti on Saturday, May 2, and Sunday, May 3, from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM, with the tasting kit available for purchase at the Union of Winemakers headquarters until 5:30 PM. Fifteen wineries participated, distributed along the four thematic routes (Cappellina, Le Valli, Due Versanti, and San Martino), in the territory that proudly holds the title of Italy's first organic wine district.
Wineries open for tastings and tours along the four thematic routes. Participation requires the tasting kit (glass with lanyard + map).
Panzano in Chianti is located along the SR222 Chiantigiana road, between Greve in Chianti and Castellina in Chianti, in the province of Florence. By car from Florence, it takes about 40 minutes via the Chiantigiana; from Siena, it takes about 50 minutes. There is no direct train connection: the most convenient station is Florence Santa Maria Novella, from which you can continue by car or regional bus services toward Chianti.
To access the tastings, you must purchase the tasting kit, which includes a wine glass with a lanyard and the map of the four routes. The kit can be picked up at the Union of Winemakers headquarters on Via Chiantigiana 62 or directly at the participating wineries.
Wineries are open for tastings and tours from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM. The kit can be purchased at the Union headquarters until 5:30 PM.
It is advisable to plan your route in advance and arrange for a designated driver or plan to walk between nearby wineries. Updated information is available on the Union of Panzano Winemakers website.
