A walk through the Villamagna DOC vineyards with wine tastings
The Vineyard Wine Trekking is a slow wine tourism experience held in Villamagna, a small village in the province of Chieti, in the heart of Abruzzo. This event combines outdoor walking with wine tasting, leading participants along an itinerary that crosses the Montepulciano vines from which one of Italy's smallest and most sought-after denominations is born.
The Villamagna DOC, recognized in 2011, covers about 85 hectares in the municipalities of Villamagna, Vacri, and Bucchianico and is considered one of the smallest denominations in the world. The star variety is the Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, which finds clay and calcareous-marly soils here capable of producing structured reds with great character. Seven local wineries have joined forces in the "Generazioni del Villamagna" association to promote the identity of this terroir together.
The route, suitable even for those who are not expert hikers, winds through hills planted with vineyards, with views stretching from the peak of the Majella to the Adriatic coast. Along the way, there are several stops dedicated to tasting Villamagna DOC wines, accompanied by typical local products and Abruzzese gastronomy. Guides share the history of the village, the work of the winemakers, and the deep bond between this community and its vines.
Villamagna preserves a characteristic historic center with a "herringbone" structure, marked by two access gates — Porta da Capo and Porta da Piedi — that lead into the ancient heart of the town. Its position, about ten kilometers from both the Majella and the Adriatic Sea, makes it an ideal destination for those seeking an authentic experience of the Chieti hinterland, among nature, wine, and tradition.
The event is organized by the Pro Loco of Villamagna in collaboration with Majexperience, an agency specializing in experiential tourism active in the Majella National Park. The Wine Trekking is part of the growing Abruzzese wine tourism movement, which enhances the territory through the combination of hiking and wine culture.
