A living nativity scene in the cork oak forest, featuring ancient crafts and the Nativity
The Villasmundo "La Ginestra" Living Nativity is one of the most evocative Christmas representations in the province of Syracuse. It takes place within the Sughereta di Villasmundo Park, a hamlet of the Municipality of Melilli, in a vast cork oak forest covering over seventy hectares just outside the town. Here, during the holidays, the woods come alive, becoming the natural stage for a story woven with tradition, spirituality, and landscape.
This is not a static display, but a true narrative journey. Along a path of approximately 300 meters winding through the forest's characteristic rocky trails, visitors pass by about twenty huts built with natural materials and animated by over one hundred actors in period costumes. The walk leads to the final Nativity scene, accompanied by an angelic choir.
Along the route, you will encounter landscape elements and settings curated down to the smallest detail:
To make the experience even more authentic, there are traditional flavors, with the opportunity to watch preparations and taste local products such as warm ricotta, tuma cheese, "ministredda" soup, and bread baked in a wood-fired oven.
The event holds special significance for the local area: the cork forest was rebuilt and returned to the community following the 2023 fire, and the living nativity celebrates its rebirth. The event is organized by the La Ginestra Villasmundo Social Promotion Association with the patronage of the Municipality of Melilli, and is part of the broader "City of Nativity Scenes" project that enlivens Melilli, Villasmundo, and Cittร Giardino throughout the province of Syracuse, in Sicily.
The 5th edition of the Villasmundo Living Nativity took place in the Sughereta Park on December 26 and 27, 2025, and January 1 and 6, 2026, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, with a special opening dedicated to schools on December 22, 2025. The inauguration on December 26 was also broadcast via live streaming. The settings that made the event famous were confirmed: the ancient well, the washhouse with waterfall, the shepherds' field, artisan workshops, the Berber market, the Roman tavern, and Herod's temple, leading up to the angelic choir and the Nativity scene. The event was part of the Municipality of Melilli's "City of Nativity Scenes" project.
