Artisanal wines from the Teatine winemakers in Piazza San Giustino, Chieti
Vignaioli in Piazza is the food and wine festival that brings Piazza San Giustino in Chieti, the provincial capital of Abruzzo, to life every June. Promoted by the Vignaioli Teatini association in partnership with FIVI (Italian Federation of Independent Winegrowers) and in collaboration with Slow Food Chieti, the event focuses on quality artisanal wine and the direct connection between producers and tasters.
For one evening, the Renaissance square overlooking the Cathedral of San Giustino turns into a grand open-air lounge: winemakers set up their stands alongside visitors for a moment of connection, toasts, and local storytelling. Guests can wander between the wineries with their own glass, receive guided tastings, and get to know the work of independent Abruzzese winemakers firsthand.
The stars of the event are the Vignaioli Teatini wineries—including Tenuta I Fauri, Cantina Rapino, Maligni, Fattoria Teatina, Cantina Wilma, Zappacosta, Rabottini, Buzzarone, and Pesolillo—joined by various FIVI producers from Abruzzo and Molise. Tastings feature the great local grape varieties: Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, Trebbiano d'Abruzzo, Cerasuolo, and the most artisanal, natural interpretations from individual producers.
Alongside the wine, the event showcases Abruzzese gastronomy: artisanal cured meats, cheeses, arrosticini, porchetta, and vegetarian options, with a strong emphasis on the region's Slow Food Presidia—from the flat white onion to the tondino bean, from the frentano sausage to the sweet pepper, as well as solina wheat, honey, and local extra virgin olive oils.
The evening's formula blends wine, food, and live music, with concerts and DJ sets keeping the atmosphere lively until late. Entry to the area is free, while tastings are purchased via tickets, which include a branded wine glass. Vignaioli in Piazza has become a staple of the Chieti summer, celebrating the viticultural heritage of the province and showcasing the food and wine identity of Abruzzo.
The fourth edition of Vignaioli in Piazza was held on Saturday, June 20, 2026, starting at 7:00 PM in Piazza San Giustino, Chieti, for the third consecutive year in the renovated square.
Wines from 17 wineries were available for tasting: the nine founding estates of the Vignaioli Teatini (Tenuta I Fauri, Maligni, Cantina Rapino, Fattoria Teatina, Cantina Wilma, Zappacosta, Rabottini, Buzzarone, and Pesolillo) and eight FIVI producers from Abruzzo and Molise. The big news of the year was the collective of Abruzzese Slow Food Presidia, celebrated during the movement's 40th anniversary.
The day opened with the morning conference Wine Tourism: From Law to Effective Implementation at the Sala Cascella of the Chamber of Commerce, before turning into a festival in the late afternoon with tango dancing, music by the group Senza Fine with guest Bepi d'Amato, and an evening DJ set. Entry was free, with tasting tickets ranging from 5 to 15 euros.
