The night Matino's historic center becomes an open-air museum
There is one summer evening when Matino, a charming village in the province of Lecce, dims its ordinary lights to let the glow of art take over. This is the night of Vicoli d'Arte, an event that every August 11th turns the town's historic center into a vast open-air museum. A one-kilometer path winds through narrow alleys, small squares, hidden courtyards, terraces, and ancient underground oil mills, immersing visitors in an experience that blends contemporary art, traditional Salento culture, and authentic Apulian flavors.
The concept behind the festival is simple yet powerful: to give the historic center back to its inhabitants and visitors by turning it into a stage for art installations, performances, and exhibitions. Every corner of the village becomes part of a story: street artists paint masterpieces on the cobblestones, courtyards open their doors to host exhibitions, and house facades provide a backdrop for theatrical and musical performances. Those wandering the alleys will discover hidden gems that would otherwise go unnoticed in daily life.
Vicoli d'Arte is not just for contemplation; it is about participation and conviviality. Along the route, you will find:
Music is the heartbeat of the evening. Alongside roaming performances, each edition features concerts and shows that draw large crowds from across Salento. A highlight is the pizzica, the traditional Salento dance that invites everyone to join the circle, while singers, musicians, and prominent guests from the Italian scene perform on stages set up throughout the village.
Vicoli d'Arte is organized by the Vicoli d'Arte APS Association in collaboration with the Municipality of Matino and under the patronage of the Province of Lecce. Established in 2017, the event has grown with every edition to become one of the most anticipated summer cultural highlights in this part of Puglia. Admission is always free, in the spirit of a festival that belongs to everyone.
The 2026 edition of Vicoli d'Arte will take place on Tuesday, August 11, in the historic center of Matino, confirming the mid-August appointment that has enlivened the Salento village for years.
As in previous editions, the circular route through alleys, courtyards, and underground oil mills will host art installations, street painters, Apulian artisan exhibitors, street performers, food areas, and live shows. The pizzica, the traditional dance of Salento, is also confirmed.
The musical program will be finalized in the weeks leading up to the event.
The evening will feature the well-established format: a one-kilometer art trail in the historic center, street painters at work, Apulian artisan exhibitors, street performers, and street food areas.
Among the musical guests announced for the 2026 edition is Fausto Leali, one of the most iconic voices in Italian music, expected in a free concert.
The rest of the lineup (shows, performances, and guests) will be announced by the organizers in the weeks preceding the event.
Vicoli d'Arte traditionally takes place on August 11th, in one grand evening that begins in the early evening and continues late into the night.
The event takes place throughout the historic center of Matino (LE), with Piazza Municipio serving as the main reference point. The circular route winds through the village's alleys, courtyards, and underground oil mills.
Matino is located in lower Salento, a short distance from Lecce, Gallipoli, and Nardรฒ. By car, it is easily reached via the highways connecting the Salento capital to the Ionian coast. The nearest train station is served by the Ferrovie del Sud Est line.
Admission to all installations, shows, and concerts is free of charge.
We recommend wearing comfortable shoes to navigate the historic center's cobblestones and arriving early to find parking in the surrounding streets.
