The neighborhood Carnival at the Giardino di Elisabetta, featuring games, snacks, and masquerade dances
The Viaccia Carnival is one of the most cherished events for the community of Viaccia, a populous village in the northwestern area of Prato, in Tuscany. Rather than a large parade of floats, this is a family-friendly village festival where children are the true stars. Every year, in the heart of the Carnival season, the streets and spaces of the neighborhood come alive with colorful masks, confetti, and streamers for a Sunday dedicated to fun and lightheartedness.
The festival takes place at the Giardino di Elisabetta, the green space created from the former washhouses of Viaccia on Via Valdingole. This site, restored and returned to the public as a cultural and social hub, has become the focal point of neighborhood life: here, in addition to the Carnival, the Viaccia Festival takes place throughout the summer, featuring theater, cinema, music, and gatherings. In winter, the garden transforms into the ideal stage to welcome children in costume and their families.
The program follows the classic and beloved format of neighborhood festivals: an afternoon dedicated to children's games, a shared snack, and masquerade dances. The atmosphere is the convivial and familiar one typical of Arci clubs, where the goal is not a grand spectacle but simply being together, letting the little ones play, and bringing a moment of joy to the whole neighborhood. In some editions, the festival also involves the square of the Santissima Trinità parish, with entertainment for children before continuing at the Giardino di Elisabetta.
The Viaccia Carnival is part of the rich landscape of carnivals in the province of Prato, which every year bring life to the neighborhoods and towns of the area, from Vaiano to Montemurlo and the villages of the main city. It is promoted by the Circolo Arci La Libertà del 1945, a historic association in Viaccia that has been keeping the neighborhood's social spirit alive for decades. Participating means discovering the most authentic and popular side of Prato, far from tourist circuits, amidst a community that values volunteering and sharing.
