The vertical mountain race in Villar Focchiardo, Susa Valley
The Vertical dü Vilé is the mountain race that brings Villar Focchiardo to life every spring. Located in a small town in the lower Susa Valley, in the province of Turin, Piedmont, the name—in the local dialect—refers to the "village vertical": an all-uphill challenge that tests legs, lungs, and determination on a short but highly demanding course.
The race is entirely uphill for approximately 2.8 kilometres, with a positive elevation gain of 605 metres, following the mule tracks and paths that lead from the town centre up towards the higher hamlets and pastures. The start is set in front of the Primary School on Via Cappella delle Vigne, while the return to the starting point after reaching the finish line at the summit is done independently. It is a technical test designed for those who love vertical running and skyrunning, but also an opportunity to discover the valley's stunning panoramas.
The Vertical dü Vilé kicks off the Vertical Valsusa and Val Cenischia Circuit, a calendar of eleven races that traverses the most picturesque towns and climbs in the region, showcasing the Susa Valley's mountains and its running heritage. The Villar Focchiardo event serves as the season's first major test for vertical running specialists.
The event is organised by Atletica Susa Adriano Aschieris in collaboration with the Municipality of Villar Focchiardo, the local Alpini Group, and the AIB (Forest Firefighters). The bond with the Alpini is particularly strong: the race is often part of the local group's initiatives, which also hosts the final social gathering with a traditional lunch, embodying the community spirit that defines these small mountain towns.
Beyond the competition, the Vertical dü Vilé is a true village festival. The enthusiastic participation of athletes and volunteers, the friendly atmosphere, and its deep roots in the life of Villar Focchiardo make it a highly anticipated event, blending the intensity of mountain racing with the values of Piedmontese alpine tradition.
