The festival of Piedmontese folk songs in Vernante, in the Vermenagna Valley
Vernant que chanta is one of the most cherished events of the Vernante summer: a festival entirely dedicated to Piedmontese folk singing that, in early June, brings the streets and squares of Vernante to life. This small town in the Vermenagna Valley, located in the province of Cuneo in the heart of southern Piedmont, is known as the "Pinocchio village" due to the murals depicting Attilio Mussino's illustrations, and for one day, it transforms into a grand, open-air stage.
The event was founded in 2010 in memory of Walter Bassignano, known as "Punta," and over the years, it has become a staple for enthusiasts of folk music from the Occitan and Piedmontese valleys. It is organized by the Pro Loco Giovani of Vernante, thanks to the dedication of numerous volunteers working to keep local traditions alive.
The heart of the festival lies in the choirs and vocal groups arriving from every corner of Piedmont. In the afternoon, these ensembles position themselves along the town's streets, creating a roaming concert where every corner of the village resonates with traditional songs. The audience wanders from square to square, listening to diverse repertoires in an informal and deeply convivial atmosphere that weaves together music, history, and community identity.
Alongside the music, a highly anticipated section is the handcrafted knife exhibition set up in Piazza de l'Ala, dedicated to the famous Vernantin, the traditional knife that serves as a symbol of local craftsmanship. The exhibition opens in the morning and welcomes visitors throughout the day, showcasing an ancient trade that remains a source of pride for the town.
The day concludes with a convivial gathering at the former sawmill, where classic polenta is served, offering a chance for residents and visitors to connect. Between singing, gastronomy, and tradition, Vernant que chanta encapsulates the welcoming spirit of the Cuneo valleys and offers visitors an authentic immersion into Piedmontese folk culture.
On Sunday, June 7, 2026, Vernante hosted a new edition of Vernant que chanta, the festival of Piedmontese folk songs organized by the Pro Loco Giovani of Vernante.
The program kicked off at 10:00 AM in Piazza de l'Ala with the opening of the handcrafted knife exhibition, dedicated to the famous Vernantin. Starting at 3:00 PM, choirs from all over Piedmont animated the streets of the center with a grand roaming concert. In the evening, around 7:00 PM, the day concluded with a convivial gathering at the former sawmill, featuring polenta and stew. The event, held in memory of Walter Bassignano, once again offered free admission.
Vernante is located along the SS20 state road (Colle di Tenda road) in the Vermenagna Valley. By car from Cuneo, take the SS20 towards Limone Piemonte (approx. 25 minutes). By train, the Cuneo-Ventimiglia line stops at the Vernante station. The festival takes place in the town's historic center.
The event takes place over the course of a single Sunday. The knife exhibition in Piazza de l'Ala opens in the morning (around 10:00 AM), choral performances in the streets begin in the afternoon (from 3:00 PM), and the convivial dinner at the former sawmill is held in the evening. Admission is free.
