The great trail running festival between the Tiber springs and the Monte Fumaiolo ridge
Every summer, the village of Verghereto, perched at over 800 meters above sea level in the heart of the Alto Savio Apennines, in the province of Forlì-Cesena (Emilia-Romagna), becomes the meeting point for hundreds of mountain running enthusiasts. The Verghereto Trail is a running event that has grown edition after edition for several years, becoming one of the most anticipated events in the trail running calendar of central-northern Italy, attracting athletes from all regions and several foreign countries.
The wild heart of this territory is Monte Fumaiolo, the mountain that shelters the springs of the Tiber, the sacred river of Rome, and not far away, those of the Savio. Running here means crossing a constantly changing landscape: badlands, dense beech forests, open ridges, and clearings from which, on clear days, the view reaches the Adriatic Sea. It is a technical terrain, made of continuous ups and downs on mule tracks and single tracks, which tests both legs and mind.
The beauty of the Verghereto Trail lies in its inclusive formula. The flagship race is the Fumaiolo Ultra Trail, 65 kilometers with 3,100 meters of positive elevation gain, reserved for the most trained ultra-trailers. Alongside it, there is the 27 km Verghereto Trail, the 16 km Short Trail, and the 10 km Walk Trail, a non-competitive walk designed for those who want to enjoy the trails without the pressure of the clock. All starts and finishes are concentrated in Piazza San Michele, in the center of the village, which for one day transforms into a large sports village.
Behind the organization is the Total Training machine along with local Pro Loco committees and the Fumaiolo Sentieri association, but above all, an army of volunteers who manage the aid stations, detours, and the most challenging passages along the route. It is this community spirit, typical of small Apennine municipalities, that makes the Verghereto Trail much more than just a race: an opportunity to discover an authentic corner of Tuscan Romagna, amidst stone villages, woods, and tradition.
For 2026, the Verghereto Trail returns on Saturday, August 22, confirming the four-route format that has led to the success of previous editions. The flagship race, the Fumaiolo Ultra Trail of 65 km and 3,100 meters of elevation gain, starts at 7:00 AM; the shorter distances start afterwards. Everything revolves around Piazza San Michele, in the center of Verghereto, the start and finish line for all events. Registrations are open on the icron.it platform.
The routes wind through the Tiber springs and the Monte Fumaiolo ridge, crossing badlands, beech forests, and mule tracks with views reaching the Adriatic. Along the Ultra route, there are scenic points for spectators at Ville di Montecoronaro, Balze, Tiber springs, and Rifugio Giuseppe.
Verghereto can be reached by car from the E45 (Orte-Ravenna), Verghereto exit, from which you drive up to the center of the village. The nearest train station is Cesena, on the Bologna-Rimini-Ancona line, from which you continue by car towards the hinterland. All starts and finishes are in Piazza San Michele.
Registration is done online on the icron.it platform via the official website vergheretotrail.it. For information, you can write to [email protected].
For competitive races, an athletic medical certificate is required, and for the ultra-marathon, mandatory gear (water supply, thermal blanket, whistle, windbreaker, charged phone). In August, the climate at altitude is pleasant, but the weather can change rapidly: it's best to be prepared.
