A festival in the heart of Ventotene

The Ventotene Lentil Festival is the event the island dedicates to its most famous agricultural product. It takes place in Piazza Castello, the main square of the village, at the foot of the castle housing the town hall. Organized by the Pro Loco Isola di Ventotene APS with the support of the Municipality of Ventotene—the smallest municipality in the Lazio region—the festival offers a simple, genuine atmosphere typical of local village fairs, featuring tastings of dishes prepared with local lentils as a way to bring the island community and visitors together.

The Ventotene lentil, an agricultural treasure

The Ventotene lentil is one of Italy's most renowned legumes. Small and flavorful, it owes its unique organoleptic properties to the island's volcanic soil and holds its texture exceptionally well during cooking. It is still cultivated today using entirely manual techniques: sowing takes place between December and March, weeding is done by hand, and the laborious harvest occurs in June, with the plants left to dry in the sun before threshing to release the seeds.

Documented cultivation dates back to the early 19th century, though some believe the legume was already grown in Roman times. In the post-war period, production—which had reached about 1,500 quintals per year—collapsed with the depopulation of the island, reducing it to a family-scale activity; today, it is experiencing a partial recovery. Since 2002, the Ventotene lentil has been included in the list of Traditional Agri-food Products (PAT) of Lazio and is part of the Slow Food Foundation's Ark of Taste, an international catalog of traditional products to be preserved.

The heart of the festival is the tasting: the Pro Loco prepares and serves dishes based on the island's lentils, the absolute star of the evening. Recent editions have taken place in the evening: the December 28, 2024 edition began at 6:00 PM (with the Grottone di Calanave as an alternative venue in case of bad weather), while the October 4, 2025 edition animated Piazza Castello from 6:30 PM. The date is not fixed: over the years, the festival has been held at various times between autumn and winter, when the island rediscovers its most authentic rhythms away from summer tourism.

The Pro Loco and the recovery of tradition

The festival was a historic event on the island that was later interrupted; it was the Pro Loco Isola di Ventotene APS that revived it as part of an effort to promote local traditions, which also includes the Moray Eel and Poor Fish Festival, the Corpus Domini Flower Festival, and the Feast of Saint Candida. The association also manages the tourist Info Point and the Visitor Center of the Marine Protected Area.

Ventotene, an island of history and nature

Attending the festival is also an opportunity to discover Ventotene, a jewel of the Pontine Islands archipelago: the Roman port carved into the tuff, the Bourbon cisterns, the islet of Santo Stefano with its Bourbon prison, and the memory of the confinement, where the famous Ventotene Manifesto was born. The island and its waters are protected by the Isole di Ventotene e Santo Stefano Marine Protected Area, a destination loved by divers and birdwatchers. A festival as small as its island, but as authentic as few others, in the heart of the Tyrrhenian Sea.
