The patronal feast of Pace del Mela, blending faith, processions, and open-air performances
The Madonna della Visitazione Festival is the most significant religious and cultural event in Pace del Mela, a town in the Metropolitan City of Messina overlooking the Tyrrhenian coast of Sicily, located in the Mela plain between Milazzo and Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto. As the community's patron saint, Maria Santissima della Visitazione is celebrated on July 2, a date that has united the entire town around the venerated wooden statue kept in the mother church for over a century.
Devotion to the Madonna della Visitazione is deeply rooted in the history of Pace del Mela. The patron saint's wooden statue made its solemn entry into the community in 1870, an event for which the parish celebrated its 140th anniversary in 2010. Since then, the festival, organized by the parish with the support of the Municipality, has become a fundamental identity-defining moment, drawing back emigrants and families originally from the area.
The festivities are structured around a novena and various themed days, running from June 22 until the patron saint's day. The main highlights include:
Beyond its liturgical dimension, the Pace del Mela festival maintains a strong sense of community and entertainment. The evenings in Piazza Maria SS. della Visitazione host theatrical shows, musical performances, and concerts by nationally renowned artists, while the fireworks on July 2 represent the most anticipated and spectacular moment of the entire celebration. The dessert festival and the Family Day tombola renew the bond with the town's gastronomic and social traditions.
Included in the summer festival calendar of the province of Messina and the Tyrrhenian coast of Sicily, the Madonna della Visitazione Festival is an opportunity to discover Pace del Mela and the Mela valley, amidst popular devotion, local identity, and hospitality. For visitors, it is also a gateway to a territory rich in history, just a few kilometers from Milazzo and the Aeolian Islands.
For 2026, the festivities honoring the patron saint of Pace del Mela follow the traditional calendar, starting on June 22 with the exposition of the statue to the community, and concluding on July 2, the day of the Madonna della Visitazione. The intermediate days are dedicated to the suffering (June 25), children (June 26), and families (June 27), with Masses, a dessert festival, and a tombola.
The highlight of the entertainment program is the concert by Aleandro Baldi, confirmed for Wednesday, July 1, 2026, in Piazza Maria SS. della Visitazione. The Tuscan singer-songwriter, winner of the Sanremo Festival with "Non amarmi" and "Passerร ," brings his greatest melodic hits to Pace del Mela. The evening of July 1 also includes the afternoon procession and solemn Vespers, while on July 2, dawn is announced by the sound of bells and fireworks, followed by Holy Mass, the procession of the patron saint's wooden group, and the final fireworks display.
Pace del Mela is located in the Mela plain, on the Tyrrhenian side of the province of Messina. By car, it can be reached via the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway, taking the Milazzo exit and continuing towards the Mela valley. The reference railway station is Giammoro - Pace del Mela, on the Messina-Palermo Tyrrhenian line. The nearest airport is Catania-Fontanarossa, about an hour and a half away by road.
The festivities generally take place from June 22 to July 2, with the patron saint's day fixed on July 2. Precise dates and times for performances are announced annually by the parish and the Municipality.
Religious celebrations, processions, open-air shows, and concerts are free to attend.
