A patronal feast at the heart of the Mela valley

The Madonna della Visitazione Festival is the most significant religious and cultural event in Pace del Mela, a town in the Metropolitan City of Messina overlooking the Tyrrhenian coast of Sicily, located in the Mela plain between Milazzo and Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto. As the community's patron saint, Maria Santissima della Visitazione is celebrated on July 2, a date that has united the entire town around the venerated wooden statue kept in the mother church for over a century.

History and devotion

Devotion to the Madonna della Visitazione is deeply rooted in the history of Pace del Mela. The patron saint's wooden statue made its solemn entry into the community in 1870, an event for which the parish celebrated its 140th anniversary in 2010. Since then, the festival, organized by the parish with the support of the Municipality, has become a fundamental identity-defining moment, drawing back emigrants and families originally from the area.

The program: eleven days of celebrations

The festivities are structured around a novena and various themed days, running from June 22 until the patron saint's day. The main highlights include:

• June 22 – Exposition of the patron saint's statue to the community;
• June 24 – Evening show in Piazza Visitazione;
• June 25 – Day of Suffering, with Holy Mass, a lunch for the elderly and people with disabilities, and the sacrament of Confirmation;
• June 26 – Children's Day, with Mass and traditional games for the little ones;
• June 27 – Family and Solidarity Day, with Mass for families, a dessert festival, and the traditional tombola;
• June 28 – Theatrical performance;
• June 29 – Novena and solemn procession of the statue;
• July 1 – Afternoon procession, solemn Vespers, and a major evening concert in the square;
• July 2 – Patron Saint's Day: festive bells and fireworks at dawn, solemn Holy Mass, procession of the Madonna's wooden group through the town, and a grand fireworks finale.

Tradition and entertainment in the square

Beyond its liturgical dimension, the Pace del Mela festival maintains a strong sense of community and entertainment. The evenings in Piazza Maria SS. della Visitazione host theatrical shows, musical performances, and concerts by nationally renowned artists, while the fireworks on July 2 represent the most anticipated and spectacular moment of the entire celebration. The dessert festival and the Family Day tombola renew the bond with the town's gastronomic and social traditions.
