The May 1st fair in Varzi

Varzi Fair is the most anticipated event of spring in the Municipality of Varzi, in the Province of Pavia, in the heart of the mountainous Oltrepò Pavese. Every May 1st, the medieval village, with its characteristic arcades and ancient tower houses, transforms into a large open-air market that attracts visitors from all over the province and neighbouring regions from morning to evening.

Between rural tradition and farm animals

The common thread of the day is the peasant civilisation of the Pavia Apennines: along the streets of the centre, there are farm animals, exhibitions of local breeds, and moments dedicated to the historic Varzese Breed, with parades of mules and carriages that recall the ancient link of the town with agricultural work and mountain trade. In the afternoon, the park of Villa Leveratto Mangini hosts an equestrian show.

The flavours of Oltrepò

The gastronomic part is one of the main attractions: the absolute star is the Salame di Varzi DOP, accompanied by ravioli, cheeses, and traditional desserts like almond cake, honey, and wines from the Oltrepò Pavese hills, from Pinot Nero to Barbera to Sangue di Giuda and Buttafuoco. The traditional lunch is served from noon by the Pro Loco.

Culture, music, and families

During the fair, you can participate in guided tours of the Malaspina Tower and the historic churches of the village, while the atmosphere is accompanied by folk music with the pifferi of Oltrepò. For the little ones, a dedicated area is set up with wooden games, creative workshops, face painting, and pony rides. The event is organised by Nuova Pro Loco Varzi with the support of the Municipality and the Lombardy Region.
