The San Giorio stop of the Susa Valley itinerant festival: cinema, theatre, and community memory
The Valsusa Filmfest is an itinerant film and cultural festival that has been crossing the Susa Valley since 1997, blending cinema, historical memory, environmental issues, and social inclusion. Born from the collaboration between the Gruppo 33 of Condove, the valley's Habitat Committee, and figures like Carla Nosenzo Gobetti and filmmaker Armando Ceste, the festival owes much to Bruno Carli, a partisan and the association's first president, to whom the festival's signature award is dedicated today.
Every year, the festival spreads across several municipalities in the upper and lower valley, with the heart of the film competition in Condove and numerous side events elsewhere. San Giorio di Susa, a small town in the Province of Turin in Piedmont, is one of the locations hosting these widespread events: at the Salone Polivalente Comunale, the festival offers evenings of theatre, storytelling, and literary meetings that connect local residents with the valley's network of associations and volunteers.
More than just a film screening, the San Giorio stop is a moment of community. Alongside the film competition, the festival features a rich program of live performances, readings, and theatrical adaptations, often inspired by the major social and civil themes that define the festival's identity. In San Giorio di Susa, the Salone Polivalente space becomes a small stage where culture meets reflection on justice, peace, and the defense of the territory.
Each edition of the Valsusa Filmfest is dedicated to a different figure or theme: from short film competitions and documentaries to thematic sections like The Alps, Deserting, Making Memory, Green Screen, and Music Videos, the festival offers a program that engages with current events and major social and environmental issues. The San Giorio di Susa stop is part of this journey, offering residents and visitors the chance to experience firsthand an event that has become a cultural landmark for the entire Susa Valley.
The event takes place in the evening at the Salone Polivalente Comunale in San Giorio di Susa and, like most of the festival's appointments, it has a strong participatory and local character, generally with free admission. It is the ideal opportunity to discover the most authentic side of the Valsusa Filmfest, far from the spotlight of major venues but very close to the stories and people of the Piedmontese territory.
The 30th edition of the Valsusa Filmfest (March 28 - May 24, 2026) was dedicated to Fabrizio De André (1940-1999), a singer-songwriter and poet of the marginalized, capable of giving voice to injustices and the fragile beauty of nature. The edition involved eight municipalities in the Susa Valley — Almese, Avigliana, Caprie, Chianocco, Condove, Oulx, San Giorio, and Villar Focchiardo — as well as Turin, with the support of a network of over thirty associations and four local schools.
In San Giorio di Susa, on Friday, May 8, at the Salone Polivalente Comunale, the festival presented a theatrical adaptation inspired by the short story "The Geranium" by Flannery O'Connor, in perfect harmony with the themes of memory, dignity, and inclusion dear to the festival and the figure of De André.
The San Giorio evening is part of the 30th edition's widespread program, dedicated to Fabrizio De André, which reached Almese, Avigliana, Caprie, Chianocco, Condove, Oulx, San Giorio, and Villar Focchiardo, as well as Turin. During other stages of the festival, the two Bruno Carli Awards were also presented to the Palestinian population and the Turin-Lyon Technical Commission of the Susa Valley Mountain Union.
