The Alpine festival at the small church of Val Moena, above Cavalese
The Val Moena Alpine Gathering is one of the most cherished events for the Alpine troops of the Val di Fiemme. Every summer, the A.N.A. Groups of Cavalese and Masi di Cavalese meet in the basin of Val Moena, above the town of Cavalese in the province of Trento, for a day dedicated to tradition, community, and a deep bond with the mountains. It is a simple, authentic gathering that brings together local Alpine soldiers, their families, and anyone wishing to hike or drive up to the charming and panoramic Alpine chapel.
The heart of the event is the Alpine chapel in Val Moena, a small sacred building commissioned and constructed by the Alpine groups of Cavalese and Masi and blessed in 1981. Nestled in the meadows at the foot of the Lagorai mountain range, the chapel is a popular hiking destination and a place of remembrance for the valley's Alpine community. It is here that the Holy Mass, the central and most moving moment of the festival, is celebrated on the day of the gathering.
The morning follows a long-established ritual. Participants meet in Cavalese before heading up to the Val Moena basin, where Holy Mass is celebrated at 11:00 AM at the Alpine chapel, accompanied by the singing of local choirs, the "La Sorgente" Choir of Masi and the Stelune Choir of Cavalese. Afterwards, around 12:00 PM, the traditional open-air Alpine lunch takes place, offering a moment of celebration and conviviality among the participants. For the occasion, the Cascata-Val Moena road is opened to traffic to allow easier access to the site.
The Val Moena gathering is part of the dense network of Alpine festivals that bring the Val di Fiemme and Trentino-Alto Adige to life during the summer, when each A.N.A. group celebrates its mountain chapel. These are recurring events that keep the memory of the Alpine troops alive, along with values of solidarity and attachment to the land, while offering residents and visitors a day in the open air, combining hiking, spirituality, and mountain cuisine.
In case of bad weather, the event is cancelled: it is always advisable to check weather conditions and updates with the Fiemme and Cembra Tourist Board before setting out.
