Four days of celebrations between the Cathedral and the Church of San Leo in Sessa Aurunca
The Triduum of Saint Leo IX is one of the most cherished events in the religious calendar of Sessa Aurunca, a city in the province of Caserta, in the far north of Campania, just a few kilometers from the border with Lazio. Every year, in the first days of May, the community gathers around the icon of the Alsatian Pope, whom local tradition inextricably links to the city's history: four days of celebrations that connect the Basilica Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, the Church of San Leo, and the Church of the Annunziata.
It should not be confused with the spring patronal feast which, together with the Madonna Avvocata del Popolo, enlivens Sessa Aurunca with brass bands, illuminations, and grand public spectacles. The Triduum is a distinct celebration, more intimate and strictly devotional, promoted by the Accollatori di San Leone IX together with the Santa Maria del Popolo Parish and the Sant'Eustachio Parish.
The most defining moment of the Triduum is the Translatio: the icon of Saint Leo IX leaves the Cathedral and is carried on shoulders to the Church of San Leo, where it remains for the central days of the celebration. At the end of the liturgical journey, the image returns to the Cathedral accompanied by the faithful in an evening procession that winds through the alleys of the medieval village. It is a simple and ancient gesture that symbolically repeats the bond between the saint and the two places of worship that guard his memory.
The Accollatoriโthe confraternity responsible for physically carrying the icon and overseeing the organizationโare the same group that animates the most important devotional processions of the year in Sessa Aurunca, starting with those of Holy Week, famous throughout Campania for its nocturnal rites.
Those who come to Sessa Aurunca for the Triduum find much more than a religious celebration. The Basilica Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, begun in 1113 and consecrated in 1183, is one of the most remarkable Romanesque monuments in Campania: the portico, the rose window, the eighteen reused columns from the ancient Suessa, the ambo, and the paschal candlestick attributed to the sculptor Pellegrino form a collection of rare quality. Not far away, the Church of San Leo has revealed, through excavations started in 2016, wall paintings dating between the 11th and 13th centuries.
The historic center, perched on the slopes of the extinct volcano of Roccamonfina, preserves the ducal castle, the Roman theater, and the Aurunci bridge: a setting that makes the visit interesting even for those not participating in the liturgies.
The atmosphere is one of authentic popular devotion, without spectacular scenography: bells, chants, the slow pace of the procession, and families stepping out of their homes as the icon passes by. The celebrations take place mostly in the late afternoon and evening, when the light on the Auruncian village is at its best. All functions are open to anyone who wishes to participate, without tickets or reservations: simply respect the liturgical nature of the moments in the church.
The 2026 Triduum followed the traditional schedule that the community of Sessa Aurunca repeats every year at the beginning of May. On Tuesday, May 5th, the icon of Saint Leo IX left the Cathedral to reach the Church of San Leo, followed by the celebration of Holy Mass. The days of Wednesday, May 6th, and Thursday, May 7th, were marked by evening Eucharistic celebrations in the Church of San Leo; at the end of Thursday's mass, the icon returned to the Cathedral accompanied by the faithful along the streets of the historic center.
Friday, May 8th, the day of the solemnity, opened in the morning at the Church of the Annunziata with the Holy Rosary and Holy Mass with the Supplication to the Madonna of Pompeii, while in the evening the Basilica Cathedral hosted the solemn concelebration presided over by the Bishop of Sessa Aurunca, Monsignor Giacomo Cirulli.
Four days dedicated to tradition and participation, confirming the role of this event in the devotional calendar of the province of Caserta, distinct from the more scenic spring patronal feast dedicated to the Madonna Avvocata del Popolo and Saint Leo IX himself.
By car: Take the Cassino exit from the A1 or the Mondragone/Falciano del Massico exit from the SS Domitiana, then follow provincial roads to Sessa Aurunca (approx. 70 km from Caserta, 90 km from Naples).
By train: Sessa Aurunca-Roccamonfina station on the Rome-Naples Tyrrhenian line, about 8 km from the historic center; bus or taxi connections are available to the center.
All celebrations are free and open to the public. The historic center is hilly and paved with stone: comfortable shoes are recommended. Parking near the Cathedral is limited on procession days; it is better to leave your car in the parking lots at the foot of the hill and walk up.
