A devotion spanning over 170 years

The Patronal Feast of the Madonna delle Grazie is the most deeply felt identity-defining event for the town of Minturno, located in the province of Latina at the southern tip of Lazio, where the Garigliano river marks the historic border with Campania. Its roots lie in a specific event: on April 6, 1850, on the Royal Bourbon Bridge over the Garigliano, the clergy and people of the then-named Traetto welcomed Pope Pius IX as he returned to Rome and asked him to place the city under the protection of the Virgin of Grace. The request was granted: with a papal brief on June 24, 1852, September 1st was set as the feast day with the rank of solemnity, confirmed by a bull on September 6 of the same year. A few months later, the Ministry of the Kingdom also recognized this date as a civil holiday throughout the municipal territory.

The religious heart of the festival

The liturgical calendar spans about twelve days, from the second half of August until September 1st, featuring novenas, moments of prayer, and celebrations presided over by the Archbishop of Gaeta. The most anticipated moment, however, remains the procession, which moves from the sanctuary and travels first through the modern city, then winds up the alleys of the medieval historic center to the Collegiate Church of Santa Croce.

The main evening, with free admission, features a long cast of Italian song performers accompanied by a live orchestra conducted by maestro Michele Pecora, under the artistic direction of Pasquale Mammaro. Over the years, the stage has hosted names well-known to the television public, and the Minturno d'Autore award is presented annually. The festival is sponsored by the Municipality of Minturno, the Lazio Region, and the Pro Loco, and is covered by various local radio and television stations.

What to expect

Those arriving in Minturno during these days will find a town in celebration in the fullest sense: illuminations along the streets, market stalls, families filling the square until late at night, and that special atmosphere that arises when an entire community gathers around its patron saint. The historic center, perched just a few kilometers from the sea, offers a charming setting, including the Collegiate Church of San Pietro, the castle, and the remains of the ancient Roman Minturnae with its theater. It is an ideal opportunity to understand how, in lower Lazio, popular religiosity and civil festivities continue to intertwine seamlessly.

The festival is traditionally concentrated between the end of August and September 1st, the date of the liturgical solemnity.
