The major summer festival for classical music and training in the Primiero valley
The Trentino Music Festival for Mezzano Romantica is much more than a simple summer event: it is a true open-air music academy that transforms the villages of Primiero in the province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige) into a sprawling stage every year. Organized by the Music Academy International of New York in collaboration with the Mezzano Romantica association, the festival is considered one of the largest European programs dedicated to musical training and performance.
The event involves several towns in the valley—Mezzano, Fiera di Primiero, Imèr, and Canal San Bovo—turning churches, squares, and auditoriums into concert halls. The Municipality of Imèr hosts some of the most intimate and highly regarded performances in the charming Church of Imèr.
Every summer, the festival welcomes 166 young artists and 39 faculty and staff members from all over the world for a lineup that exceeds thirty performances. The program ranges from opera to musicals, from symphonic concerts to chamber music, as well as dance performances and guest artist recitals.
The Trentino Music Festival is led by artistic directors Mitchell Piper and Robin Blauers Piper, with musical direction by Maestro J. David Jackson. The Mezzano Romantica portion is curated by Francesco Schweizer. This collaboration combines the international training experience of the Music Academy with the cultural promotion of the Primiero territory.
All main concerts are free of charge, making the festival an accessible event for both residents and tourists. On summer evenings, amidst the Dolomite mountains and the historic village churches, classical music reaches an audience that might otherwise rarely encounter productions of this caliber. It is a unique opportunity to experience Trentino-Alto Adige in a new light, where Alpine tradition and international musical culture meet.
The 2026 edition confirms the Trentino Music Festival for Mezzano Romantica as one of the most important summer festivals for training and performance in Europe. The overall calendar for Mezzano Romantica runs from June 20 to August 20, 2026, while the intensive session of the Trentino Music Festival is concentrated from Monday, July 6 to Saturday, July 18.
In Imèr, at the local church, the most anticipated moment is the chamber music concert by the festival faculty, featuring musicians from the MAI Music Academy in New York.
The 2026 lineup includes over thirty events distributed between Mezzano, Fiera di Primiero, Imèr, and Canal San Bovo. Key venues include: the Intermunicipal Auditorium of Primiero in Fiera di Primiero, the churches of Mezzano, Imèr, and Canal San Bovo, Piazza Brolo, and the Civic Center of Mezzano.
