Floats, masquerades, and street parties in a seaside village near Palermo
The Trappeto City Carnival is one of the most cherished and well-attended events in the winter calendar of the small town of Trappeto, a seaside village overlooking the Gulf of Castellammare in the province of Palermo, Sicily. For over twenty years, the festival has transformed the town's streets and the central Piazza Falcone e Borsellino into a stage of color, masks, and joy, attracting families, groups, and curious onlookers from surrounding areas.
The heart of the event is the grand parade of allegorical floats, built over months of hard work by local associations, schools, and volunteer groups. Alongside the floats, the procession features masked groups, choreography, and sets that blend pop culture, fairy tales, current events, and local traditions. The best costumes are awarded prizes at the end of the festival, with special recognition given to the town's youth and schools.
Beyond the parade, the program includes musical performances, dancing, entertainment, street food areas, and the traditional open-air disco with DJs keeping the crowd dancing until late at night. The festival thus combines the daytime carnival procession with the evening party in the square, creating a festive atmosphere throughout the entire village.
The Carnival is organized by the Municipality of Trappeto with the support of the Pro Loco, local associations, and the many volunteers who make the event possible every year. The festival is free to attend and serves as a moment of strong cohesion for the Trappeto community, as well as an opportunity to discover an authentic village on the Palermo coast during the Shrove Tuesday period. Over the years, the event has grown into a staple of the local Carnival circuit, attracting audiences from across the Gulf of Castellammare and the province of Palermo.
The 21st edition of the Trappeto City Carnival was spread over two days. On Saturday, February 14, starting at 7:00 PM, the street food area opened in Piazza Falcone e Borsellino, followed by Caribbean dance performances by ASD AM Dance and a musical show by Radio Time until late at night.
The highlight was Tuesday, February 17, Shrove Tuesday: at 3:30 PM, the grand parade of allegorical floats and masked groups traveled through the town, featuring five floats inspired by the themes of Super Mario, Social Mania, Alice in Wonderland, Atlantis – Guardians of the Sea, and a float by the students of the Trappeto school. In the evening, from 8:00 PM, the open-air disco featured DJs Niko Ru', Hendrix, Gianmarco, and Leonardo, followed by the awards ceremony for the best masks.
The first prize of 500 euros for the best mask went to the Rettore Evola Comprehensive Institute. Mayor Santo Cosentino expressed his satisfaction with the extraordinary participation, thanking the administration, councilor Salvatore Orlando, the associations, the volunteers, and law enforcement.
The parades and shows take place in the streets of Trappeto's town center (PA) and in Piazza Falcone e Borsellino.
During the Carnival period, between February and early March, with the main parade typically held on Shrove Tuesday.
