A showcase of craftsmanship and local heritage in Piazza Garibaldi, San Giuseppe Vesuviano
Tradizioni in Piazza is the event series through which the Municipality of San Giuseppe Vesuviano chose to put local craftsmanship and civic identity back at the center in 2026. Explicitly presented as the 1st Edition 2026, the project was promoted by the Department of Commerce and Productive Activities and was born, as explained by Councilor Valentina Scudieri, from listening to local businesses and the desire to build a stable calendar of events capable of attracting both residents and visitors.
The format is not that of a festival concentrated into a few days: the event accompanies the city for months, with one themed appointment at a time, always on a Sunday. The calendar for the first edition was structured as follows:
Each date features a different theme that sets the tone for the displays and stall offerings: from carnival costumes inspired by artisan trades to spring flowers, and finally a closing day dedicated to reuse and creative recycling.
The common thread of the event is local expertise. Artisans, producers, associations, and merchants bring to life a journey that alternates between demonstrations, workshops, exhibits, and tasting moments. It is a program that combines popular culture, creativity, and gastronomic excellence, with the stated goal of creating new opportunities for local businesses while strengthening community spirit.
For visitors, this means being able to observe up close the techniques that usually remain inside workshops, chat with producers, and take home something with a story: a handmade object, a local product, or a delicious sample.
The heart of the initiative is Piazza Garibaldi, in the city center, which transforms into a lively, participatory space from 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM during each event. The extended hours, from morning until evening, are a deliberate choice: they allow people to stop by the square after their Sunday shopping, return in the afternoon with children, and stay for the final part of the day, when the lights change the atmosphere of the center.
San Giuseppe Vesuviano is a town of just over thirty thousand inhabitants in the Metropolitan City of Naples, in Campania, nestled at an altitude of about 100 meters on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius, in the inner Vesuvian area. It is a city of commerce and small-scale manufacturing, and this productive vocation explains why the festival was designed more as a showcase of local work than as simple entertainment. In presenting the project, Mayor Michele Sepe emphasized the desire to restore centrality to the cultural identity and skills that characterize the city.
Tradizioni in Piazza is not a major tourist event, and that is exactly its appeal: it is a local town event in the best sense of the word, where the audience is primarily made up of residents and those from neighboring Vesuvian towns. Those arriving from further away will find a full day outdoors, with free admission, in an urban center that tells its story through its trades, with the possibility of combining the visit with the nearby Vesuvius National Park.
The inaugural edition of Tradizioni in Piazza chose continuity over a single event: seven Sundays distributed between February and July 2026, all in Piazza Garibaldi, all with the same continuous hours from 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM. The project was promoted by the Department of Commerce and Productive Activities of the Municipality of San Giuseppe Vesuviano, in the province of Naples.
It started on February 22 with the Carnival of Trades and Traditions, followed on March 8 by Women's and Father's Day and on March 29 by Creative Easter. April 12 was the turn of San Giuseppe in Bloom, May 10 for the Month of the Rose, and June 14 for the Summer Solstice; the festival closed on July 5 with the White Night of Recycling.
Each appointment offered a path dedicated to local expertise, with live demonstrations, workshops, exhibits, and tasting moments. The goal, declared by the administration, was twofold: to support local commerce and productive activities and to strengthen the community's bond with its city center.
On each day, the square hosts artisans, producers, associations, and merchants with demonstrations, workshops, exhibits, and tastings. Local sources did not release a detailed hourly program for individual workshops and entertainment.
All events are held in Piazza Garibaldi, in the center of San Giuseppe Vesuviano (ZIP 80047), Metropolitan City of Naples, with continuous hours from 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM.
