The public assembly on traditional music in San Vito dei Normanni
Tradizione Vuole is the opening day of the World Music Academy season, which every year transforms San Vito dei Normanni, in the province of Brindisi, into the epicenter of a permanent laboratory dedicated to roots-based arts. Not a concert or a festival in the classic sense, but a public assembly: an open space for discussion where oral traditional music is thought about, debated, and relaunched towards the future. The event is held at the ExFadda Urban Laboratory, the cultural heart of the Apulian town.
The format of Tradizione Vuole consists of a day structured into morning and afternoon panels, dedicated to thematic focuses connected to the research, training, and production lines developed by the World Music Academy. Scholars, cultural professionals, musicians, and artistic communities gather around the table, called upon to question the state of the art of Italian traditional repertoires and their dialogue with the contemporary world. The goal is to take stock of what it means today to pass on, study, and reinvent folk music, restoring to tradition its living and constantly transforming nature.
Tradizione Vuole is the inaugural moment of Nuova Generazione Trad, the project that the World Music Academy carries out in San Vito dei Normanni with the support of the Ministry of Culture through the Single Fund for the Performing Arts. The project weaves together the transmission of folk repertoires and new creative trajectories, with artistic residencies, moments of public discussion, original productions, and field research activities. The assembly day thus acts as a compass for the entire year, anticipating the themes and directions that will animate the following months.
From the assembly begins a calendar that hosts three national and international artistic residencies in San Vito dei Normanni, accompanied by concerts and public events between ExFadda and the Teatro Tex: Voci in Ascolto, dedicated to oral traditional singing, Coreutica, focused on Mediterranean dances and music, and InOrbita, focused on the Italian drum. Alongside these are the activities of the Music School and the Pizzica School, which root a solid community of practice and learning in the territory.
The ExFadda Urban Laboratory, once an ancient social winery, is today one of the most vibrant cultural spaces in Puglia and the natural home of Tradizione Vuole. Immersed in the community of San Vito dei Normanni, it offers the day an informal and participatory context, where the exchange between generations of musicians and researchers becomes an integral part of the experience. For those who love the folk music of Salento and the entire peninsula, the event is a unique opportunity to get into the heart of the processes that keep tradition alive.
On April 19, 2026, the ExFadda Urban Laboratory in San Vito dei Normanni hosted the second edition of Tradizione Vuole, the inaugural day of the Nuova Generazione Trad season. The assembly, promoted by the World Music Academy with the support of the Ministry of Culture, was structured into morning and afternoon panels, dedicated to the thematic focuses of research, training, and production on oral traditional repertoires.
The day anticipated the entire 2026 calendar, presenting the three artistic residencies hosted in San Vito dei Normanni: Voci in Ascolto (May 28โJune 1), dedicated to traditional singing, Coreutica (July 12โ18), on Mediterranean dances and music, and InOrbita (November 4โ7), on the Italian drum.
