The village festival of Badia featuring the traditional cattle drive from the alpine pastures
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Gní de munt / Segra de Badia is the village festival (known as segra in Ladin and Kirchweihfest in German) of the municipality of Badia/Abtei, the heart of Alta Badia in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, Trentino-Alto Adige. It is one of the most iconic events of the Ladin valley: a full day where the community gathers to celebrate its parish and bid farewell to the end of the alpine grazing season.
The most anticipated moment is the Gní de munt, the traditional cattle drive from the alpine pastures (known as Almabtrieb in German and desmontegada in Italian). At the end of summer, the festively decorated herds return from the high mountain pastures to the village stables: an ancient rite celebrated in the Dolomites every year between late September and early October, depending on grazing conditions and the weather. The arrival of the animals in Badia is welcomed by locals and visitors alike as a sign that the alpine year has drawn to a close.
The festival combines the religious dimension of the Kirchweihfest with the convivial atmosphere of a rustic village fair. Around the J. B. Runcher Event Hall on Str. San Linert, the village offers local culinary specialties and live music in a family-friendly setting that appeals to all ages. It is an authentic opportunity to experience the Ladin culture of Alta Badia away from the major tourist crowds.
The event is hosted by the Bauernjugend Badia, the local rural youth organization, which keeps this farming tradition alive and manages every aspect of the event, from the cattle drive to welcoming the visitors.
The date for the 2026 edition of Gní de munt / Segra de Badia has not yet been officially announced. As every year, the village festival of Badia will be linked to the cattle drive from alpine pastures (desmontegada / Almabtrieb), traditionally celebrated at the end of summer. The program will likely follow the usual structure: return of the cattle in the afternoon at the J. B. Runcher Event Hall, local culinary specialties, and live music. The official date and full program will be published by the organizers (Bauernjugend Badia) and on the Alta Badia tourist channels.
