Parma's symphonic summer in the spirit of Arturo Toscanini
The Toscanini Festival is the open-air summer event of the Fondazione Arturo Toscanini, the Parma-based institution that preserves and promotes the legacy of the great conductor to whom it is dedicated. Every year, between the second half of June and the first half of July, the festival transforms Parma and various locations in its province into stages under the stars, with a program that intertwines the great symphonic repertoire, jazz, chamber music, and special projects designed for a wide audience.
The artistic heart of the event is the Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini, one of the most recognized symphonic ensembles in Italy, joined by young ensembles from the Toscanini Academy — the Big Band, the Sax Ensemble, the String Quartet, and chamber ensembles. Renowned international conductors and emerging talents take turns on the podium, presenting programs designed to appeal to both enthusiasts and those discovering classical music for the first time.
The festival traditionally opens with a grand free concert at the Liberty Sheds of the Music Park, on the occasion of the Fête de la Musique, and concludes with a high-impact symphonic event in Piazza Duomo, in the monumental heart of Parma. Between these two focal points, concerts are held in evocative city center locations — Piazza and Piazzale San Francesco, the Casa della Musica — and in villas and castles of the Province of Parma, such as Montechiarugolo Castle, the Rocca di Sala Baganza, the Palace of Colorno, and Villa Pallavicino in Busseto.
More than just a concert season, the Toscanini Festival is an invitation to discover Emilia-Romagna through its places: each evening becomes an opportunity to visit villages, historic residences, and monuments, combining great music with the food and wine of the Parma region — culatello, prosciutto, Parmigiano Reggiano, and wines from the Colli hills. Parma, a UNESCO Creative City for Gastronomy and home to a strong musical tradition, provides the ideal setting for a festival that unites artistic excellence and regional identity.
The 2026 edition of the Toscanini Festival takes place from June 21 to July 16 in Parma and its province, with a concert program dedicated to Arturo Toscanini, performed by the Arturo Toscanini Philharmonic and ensembles from the Toscanini Academy.
The festival opens on June 21 with a grand free concert at the Liberty Sheds of the Music Park, on the occasion of the Fête de la Musique, and closes on July 16 in Piazza Duomo with a Wagnerian tribute conducted by Robert Trevino. In between, the program alternates symphonic, jazz, and chamber evenings in the city and in prestigious locations in the province such as Montechiarugolo Castle, Rocca di Sala Baganza, the Palace of Colorno, and Villa Pallavicino in Busseto.
By Train: Parma is on the high-speed Milan–Bologna line and is served by numerous regional connections; from the station, the historic center and the Music Park are reachable on foot or by public transport. By Car: Parma is on the A1 motorway (Milan–Bologna) and at the junction with the A15; the provincial venues (Montechiarugolo, Sala Baganza, Colorno, Busseto) are easily reachable by car from the provincial capital.
Tickets can be purchased online on the official platform ticket.latoscanini.it and at the Fondazione Toscanini ticket office (Viale Barilla 27/a, tel. 0521 391339, [email protected]). Free concerts can be booked online. Season ticket holders are entitled to priority booking with a dedicated discount.
As most concerts are held outdoors in the evening, it is advisable to bring a light jacket for the evening and arrive a bit early. The visit can be combined with Parma's treasures (Baptistery, Teatro Regio, Pilotta) and the region's typical gastronomy.
